🎄 It’s that time of year, when we say goodbye to our Christmas trees! 🎄 A San Francisco tradition will return this January, continuing an over 30-year legacy of holiday tree recycling. The longstanding program turns the holiday pines, spruces and firs into environmentally-friendly mulch and keeps them out of the landfill. Recycling your Christmas tree is easy. Simply place your unadorned tree curbside, next to your blue recycling bin, the night before your regular collection day between Jan. 2 and Jan. 12. Recology will take it away. Each year around this time, due to the efforts of San Francisco residents, the City recycles 500 tons of trees on average. “We never want to see old Christmas trees left out on the sidewalk willy-nilly for extended periods of time where they can become hazards,” said San Francisco Public Works Director Carla Short. “San Francisco’s tree-cycling initiative helps keep our neighborhoods clean and safe by allowing residents to dispose of their old trees properly and put them to good use as mulch that can be used for gardens and farms.”  Before putting your tree out for pickup, please remember to remove all tinsel, decorations, nails, plastic bags, stands and lights – anything that was added to the natural tree. If your tree measures more than 6 feet tall, please cut it in half. Trees should not be put into a plastic bag. The GALL! The ego! The superiority complex! Who are we to think this is okay?? It is unacceptable (and NOT normal!) to so recklessly trash the very #ecosystems we value for our mental and physical and social health. I believe that if you are a park concessionaire—who benefits directly from the physical and aesthetic health of the park and all the customers that leads to—that it’s your obligation to treat that park well. And I believe that if you’re a park visitor and appreciator, it is your duty to T R Y to not #pollute so much during your reading break, happy hour, or meet up. Vendors MUST stop serving beer, coffee, and ice cream in #singleuseplastics that cause irreparable damage to our environment. And park goers MUST walk their talk and TRY to bring reusable cups and cutlery. We must do both. ✍️ If you haven’t yet, sign the petition to tell McCarren Park House that there’s no place for plastics in parks. Send to a friend, and then hold each other accountable to #votewithyourdollar and pack your next picnic in reusables. Because ICYMI: plastics (which come from #fossilfuels) don’t get recycled. They sit around for hundreds of years and break down into #microplastics that leech chemicals into our bodies. They are poison, and they are a leading contributor to our #climate and #ecological crisis. And no one’s gonna stop you from using and normalizing them accept: you. You trying on a personal level, and you speaking up at a societal level. 😈 Get radicalized about plastics—we didn’t use to live this way, and we don’t have to keep living this way! Know before you throw - Have you ever wondered if you can recycle your old Christmas lights? The answer is no, these do not belong in your curbside or commercial recycling bin. These can entangle around equipment in recycling facilities and cause unsafe situations for recycling employees. These need to be disposed of in a trash container, or if you live in the Kansas City area and you have old, broken holiday lights gathering dust in your garage, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium will recycle them for you. They’re working to keep environmentally harmful plastic, copper, and lead out of landfills. You can take your old lights to the zoo’s guest relations desk during regular hours (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The zoo will close at 2 p.m. New Year’s Eve and will not be open on New Year’s Day. We make things simple by providing opportunities for tenants to ethically dispose of their old electronics and gadgets. By participating, it’s easier than ever for members of these communities to actively contribute to reducing electronic waste and fostering environmental responsibility.

 ➡ Document Shredding
 Trammell Crow Center in Dallas, TX conducts frequent shredding services powered by Balcones. As a result of shredding paper, tenants can experience peace of mind, protect sensitive information, and help cut down on the amount of paper being thrown into landfills by up to 60%.
 ➡ Eyeglasses Donation Drive
 Last month, Trammell Crow Center, our corporate offices in Los Angeles and Dallas, and all Regent Property Management offices participated in a unique recycling program to help those in need to collect used eyeglasses, sunglasses, and unused contact lenses. This ethical approach to spring cleaning aimed to make a difference by providing resources that could help children with reading, adults with career success, and seniors with independence.

 In San Diego, CA, at 1 Columbia Place, 2 Columbia Place, and 701B, we are proud to introduce a comprehensive organic waste recycling program across our buildings. This initiative aligns with California State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), aimed at reducing organic waste in landfills, to make the city a more sustainable and thriving place for everyone. We are delighted to champion an essential cause and a significant milestone in San Diego's waste management history.

 March 23rd marked an exciting day in the Dallas Arts District at Trammell Crow Center as the property rallied tenants to partake in Earth Hour. I am so, so tired of seeing a deluge of #singleUsePlastics pile up in and around #trash receptacles each day in my neighborhood #park. It genuinely confounds me that park #vendors (who directly profit from the #greenspace that houses their #business...) face no accountability when it comes to #pollution mitigation in the park they benefit from. ♻️ Please sign my #petition to kindly encourage that Park House—a fantastic and recently refurbished space in #Brooklyn's McCarren Park, that includes much-needed #publicRestrooms— stop the distribution of #plastic beer and coffee cups, and instead transition to a #circular cup or #compostable model. It is unacceptable that we allow and normalize #ecocide like this. We must simultaneously do the work to mitigate our own plastics consumption and also hold vendors to a higher standard. Because news flash: We don't have to live this way—and we used to NOT live this way! “Composting should be free just like trash” If only that was how it worked. —————————— During #EarthDay and International Compost Awareness Week festivities, I got that chance to be out and about at various community events representing WasteNot, Inc. At these events, there are always a few people who want to start composting with our service, but aren’t able to commit the necessary funds in their budget at the moment. Inevitably, some of these people will plead with me that composting should be free for everyone. While I love the sentiment, I envy the communication specialists who have been able to convince a large portion of the population that collecting trash is free of charge. I end up being the bearer of bad news in these scenarios - telling passionate would-be-composters that trash actually is not free. Whether you know it or not, everyone is paying for trash (and the maintenance of defunct landfills) one way or another. I know that if people understood the true cost of trash and there were more incentives in place to decrease generation of trash in the first place, we’d create an economy in which composting is the cost effective waste disposal option. Anyway, here is a selfie I took last week when I took the day off to head to Springfield for Illinois Environmental Council Zero Waste Lobby Day. It was great to speak with legislators interested in making changes to the Illinois waste landscape. As always, it's a privilege to work at WasteNot, Inc. where we’re making strides everyday to lower that barrier for entry and to make sustainable waste disposal a seamless addition to any home or business.

Get involved in 2024, you should try these: ✅Organize Tree Planting Events: Start by collaborating with local schools and community centers to organize tree-planting events. Provide the necessary tools and guidance, and educate the children on the importance of trees for the environment. Ensure each child plants a tree and understands how to care for it.  This hands-on activity not only teaches them about nature but also instills a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. ✅Conduct Park Clean-Up Campaigns: Arrange regular park clean-up events where children can participate in removing litter and debris. Provide gloves, bags, and proper waste disposal methods.  Educate them on the impact of pollution and the benefits of keeping natural spaces clean. This activity helps them learn about the importance of waste management and fosters a sense of community pride. ✅Interactive Recycling Workshops: Create engaging workshops focused on recycling. Use interactive activities and games to teach children how to sort recyclables, the process of recycling, and its benefits to the environment.  Provide take-home materials and resources so they can practice and share what they learned with their families.
