We were hearing from students who were losing their internships and professors worried for students at risk of not graduating. We ran several focus groups with students and quickly realized that we would never replace the in-person experience of an internship, but we could help with everything else they wanted. And a crazy idea was born. What if we created a fully virtual internship experience? So we did it. And it went viral. People from all over the country and world started to share about The Externship, and the idea took off. But something else happened. We thought we were solving a problem for college juniors and seniors who lost their internships, but we started to see others join: career changers, veterans, stay-at-home parents looking to get back into the workforce, and even a few high-school students. We discovered that we were actually solving a much larger problem … Access to financial planning. No longer was this field inaccessible to the stay-at-home parent who couldn’t do an internship or the career changer who wasn’t in a position to quit their job or the college student who couldn’t afford an internship or didn’t even know to do one. Since the first Externship, we have trained over 3,200 aspiring financial planners, and they're an incredible and diverse group. We've shown them what a career in financial planning looks like, and they have shown us their passion and vision to reach more and have an even greater impact. As we gear up to open registration for this summer’s Externship, I can’t help but reflect on what a wild ride this has been. It's only possible because of the wide support of so many within the financial planning community. Thank you for being part of this journey with us. The sheer number of people who have volunteered their time, shared the Externship or, best of all, taken the Externship is astonishing. The Externs are here to have an impact and change things. I can’t wait to meet this year’s Externs!

INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Mason Kofi Harrington We are in the midst of summer and enjoying the mostly sunny days so far. During this time, we have had the great experience of welcoming Mason Harrington back as our summer intern. Mason first joined us as an intern in 2023 and has returned to further his industry knowledge and apply what he has been learning in college. Read more about Mason's experience below. Q: What college are you attending? A: Santa Clara University, Leavy School of Business. Q: What is your major? A: Business Undeclared but leaning towards finance. Q: What do you hope to learn in your internship? What do you hope to achieve in your future career in the financial services industry? A: I hope to learn more about the various investment types and the strategies involved in creating and managing client portfolios. Let’s talk about the differences between a traditional internship and The Externship. I created The Externship in 2020 to help aspiring financial planners who had their internships canceled due to the pandemic. So why keep The Externship going after 2020? Because we heard about (and saw for ourselves) the unique benefits of this program! So many Externs told us how much they… - appreciated being able to learn at home on their own time. - enjoyed hearing from several different financial professionals. - could not feasibly take part in a traditional internship because of full-time jobs or caretaking responsibilities - learned by completing homework assignments pulled from real client scenarios. - loved earning 180 CFP Board Standard Pathway experience hours over the summer. There are many aspiring financial planners who don’t have the opportunities or means to complete an internship. But they can get hands-on experience, mentoring, training, and official experience hours on their own terms! That’s why we keep offering The Externship — to support as many people as possible. In the summer of 1999, my journey took an unexpected turn when I embarked on the Varsity Internship Program with a division of Thomas Nelson Bible Publishing Company. This rigorous program was a door-to-door internship, operating on 100% commission. Each day, we knocked on 20 doors, learning invaluable lessons in business management along the way. From inventory management to customer service, sales tactics to territory utilization, and even bookkeeping, every aspect of running a business was laid bare before us. But beyond the practical skills, this experience taught me something far more profound – it taught me resilience. Through the highs and lows of that summer, I learned to master my emotions, to control what I could, and to be mindful of the influences shaping my journey. What I read and listened to mattered, shaping the direction of my path. Today, over a decade later, I find myself reflecting on that pivotal summer. It was a hard, yes, but one that ultimately led me to discover my true passion. It's a reminder that no matter the obstacles we face, staying the course and refusing to give up can lead us to unexpected places. So, as you navigate your own journey, remember the lessons of perseverance and resilience.
