Opinion: Don’t destroy historic Bay Area neighborhoods to solve housing crisis In recent years, historic preservation has come under intense fire from state Sen. Scott Wiener and his YIMBY allies for allegedly interfering with housing production. However, the regional housing crisis can be solved without destroying historic neighborhoods. After coming of age in the late 1960s, preservation focused on properties associated with the nation’s elite. However, this has changed as the scope of what society thinks deserves protection has broadened. For example, did you know that San Francisco’s Tenderloin is the city’s largest historic district? Without historic preservation, we would have no Palace of Fine Arts, no Alamo Square, no Tonga Room, no Alcatraz and no Paramount Theater. The list goes on and on. Since becoming The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland almost six months ago, we’ve heard a lot of different feedback. Amid overwhelming support for the space our new name creates for Indigenous perspectives on the history here, we’re also aware of some fear and discomfort around our name change. I recently met with a group of community members who feel strongly that the name Fort Calgary should remain for this site. Their concerns mainly stem from a perception that the name change will serve to erase Fort Calgary’s history and the legacy of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP). I continuously reflect on the logic and irony of this position. We’re more committed than ever to understanding and sharing credible information about Fort Calgary and the impacts of its presence on this land. Our staff historian is examining historical records through a critical lens. We are learning more about, among other things, how the NWMP jailed women for “lunacy” at Fort Calgary, and how officers here aided in the return of runaway children to residential schools. How can we have truthful conversations about this history under a banner that serves to glorify the NWMP, the systems they upheld and the harm they caused? I am responsible for stewarding this public land, and I am dedicated to our organization’s contribution to becoming an anti-racist city, as outlined in the City of Calgary Anti-Racist Strategic Plan. As the leader of a cultural institution and nationally designated historic site in Canada, I am committed to meeting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. This is our path, and these commitments are integral to our organization’s journey. Unfortunately, our direction is difficult for some to accept. People question why we can’t just go back to the way things were. Why not continue delivering the same story? I acknowledge everyone is on their own journey—that some don’t yet know or believe the truth that must come before reconciliation. Conversations about this subject can be incredibly challenging. Although we try to meet people where they are, we can’t go backwards. Community members and visitors who support The Confluence’s journey have shared they are not interested in upholding a version of the past that only frames a fraction of the picture, and nor am I, as uncomfortable as that might feel.

We’re incredibly proud to have been a partner on this project with London Borough of Camden who have created the toolkit "Interpreting Statues and Memorials in the Public Realm." As part of a phased programme, Camden Council is reinterpreting around 70 statues and memorials across the borough. This initiative aims to provide balanced and historically accurate narratives that acknowledge both the positive contributions and the more controversial aspects of the figures commemorated. One of the key successes of this project has been the reinterpretation of statues of Virginia Woolf, Noor Inayat Khan, and Bertrand Russell. These reimagined narratives, enriched with diverse perspectives, are now accessible to the public via QR codes, offering a more inclusive view of history. The toolkit emphasises the critical role of community involvement in this process. By engaging local residents in meaningful discussions, we ensure that our public spaces reflect a wide range of voices and stories. Beyond interpretation, the toolkit also offers essential guidance on legal considerations, ownership issues, and project governance, serving as a practical resource for local authorities looking to undertake similar initiatives. Learn more about the project, and also access the toolkit via our website - https://lnkd.in/db4Qf5UU This collaboration highlights the importance of creating public spaces that truly reflect our diverse society. By re-evaluating and reinterpreting public monuments, we not only preserve history but also ensure that it is inclusive and representative of all communities. Art School Plus is proud to have played a role in this vital work. #PublicArt #Inclusivity #CommunityEngagement

Housing is a perfectly fine investment even when prices/rents aren't increasing, https://lnkd.in/gWe3s7i3 This is because asset prices are based on the net expected value of future cash flow (or expected value of avoided rents), and they adjust to that expected value of future cash flow. Markets where rents are expected to increase see prices well above what makes sense based on current rents and that upfront negative cash flow is balanced by the appreciation caused by increasing rents. "Treating something as an investment" doesn't magically make its price go up. Restricting the ability to increase quantity supplied in response to increases in demand does though. This diversion against "financialization" is misguided. If Coca-Cola stockholders managed to get all other soda producers outlawed we wouldn't be talking about how treating stocks as an investment was the cause of "unaffordable soda".
