Congratulations to Ethan Winget, Pier 60 Operations Manager, on being named September 2024 Employee of the Month! Ethan recently went above and beyond when a young child wandered into the Pier 60 Bait House upset and unable to find his parents. After unsuccessful attempts to contact the child's family over the intercom, Ethan reassured the child and accompanied him on a search along the beach. After 30 minutes, Ethan successfully reunited the child with his family. Ethan’s calm demeanor, quick thinking and compassionate approach during a stressful situation exemplify the kind of superior public service that keeps our community safe and showcases our commitment to being a high-performing government. Thank you, Ethan, for your dedication and kindness to our residents and visitors. You make Clearwater thrive!

Yet again another tragic, avoidable death of a vulnerable child. This serves as a timely reminder to review our safeguarding policies and procedures. How robustly are they understood and implemented by leaders and staff? Do we just learn safeguarding information to satisfy Ofsted, or do staff know how to implement them, all day, every day? My concern is that some training offered to practitioners is outdated and, quite frankly, not fit for purpose. Staff do not gain the necessary updated skills they need to fully understand how to implement a positive safeguarding culture in their settings. We should be questioning whether every child is safe, or at risk of harm, every day. Our professional curiosity should be telling us when something is not right, and then we should be confident about what to do. We adopt a different approach to the safeguarding training we deliver. It’s face-to-face, practice-based and full of meaningful discussion and activities which are relatable to leaders and staff. We cover all the levels of training, such as introductory level through to DSL. Each training package is full of scenarios which could happen in a setting everyday. Our clients tell us staff leave our training inspired and confident in understanding their statutory duties. Can we help you? #safeguardingchildren #safeguardingtraining #dsl #earlyyears #earlyyearstraining

Met today with MP Fast, police and community leaders to discuss gang prevention efforts. I was impressed by the level of commitment from everyone involved and the past success Abbotsford has experienced in ending “gang life”. Moving forward, I would focus on two key strategies that enhance public safety and provide a way out of gang life for many young people: 1. Develop a comprehensive plan with full support from all key stakeholders. 2. Advocate for sustainable, long-term funding for gang prevention programs. A public-private partnership (P3) approach could be a viable solution to secure ongoing resources. As your MP, I will champion these initiatives.

This is such an important message. Parents, keeping an open dialogue with your children is the first step. We must have proactive conversations. When children hear about these dangers from us first, they’re more likely to know how to handle it when it happens. When we introduce technology to our kids, we’re not just introducing them to the world, we’re giving the world access to our children. #sextortion #bigtech #socialmedia

This spring I had a BLAST giving tech tips as an emcee at a staff safety briefing at Boston College. But they taught me more than I taught them. The program had three speakers who gave presentations about campus safety to the facility staff. Between 6am and 6pm, we did it three times: once for each shift. One speaker shared what to do in case of an active shooter on campus. I learned: 🚪 How to use a chair, zip tie, stacked furniture and more to secure a door. (put legs of the chair between door handles, zip tie the mechanical door hinge, stack furniture from one wall to the door so there's more to brace...) 👮♀ What to do when police come through an area where you are hiding/waiting. (Show them your empty hands, wait for instructions, don't get upset if they don't attend to victims while they are searching...) 🏃♂️ Don't confront the shooter at all or try to get them to see the logic. Run as far away as possible. But by far the most impactful lesson came from this video: https://lnkd.in/e2hmA-za Please watch it. No matter your politics, it has an amazing message.
