From Hawking to Tech Sales My journey into sales didn't start in an office; it began on the bustling streets of Ibadan. There was a difficult period for my parents in 2005, where after school, I would hawk sachet water to support my mother. My biggest trainers were my brothers, who have mastered the art of selling multiple bags of sachet water in less than an hour. As a secondary school student, I faced tough and rough experiences. But in those moments, I learned grit and agility, refusing to back down in the face of life's challenges. I vividly remember the day one of my schoolmates saw me after school. He was shocked to see his health prefect hawking. There was no room for shame; there is dignity in labour. Supporting a mother with four boys and a husband who didn't receive his pension regularly was a necessity. Years later, I'm doing the same thing in a different way, now as a B2B Sales Lead driving customer adoption and partnership acquisition across emerging markets. Often, our current experiences, even when they seem senseless, are pieces of a puzzle and resources for our future goals. Do not despise your days of small beginnings. Every compelling story has its moments of horror and shock. Never let today's contradictions sink tomorrow's expectations. Still far from your life's goals? No pressure! Do you #buylocal personally?   I have always bought local personally because the product is often better, it's much better for the environment and every '£' goes much further in the local community!   But back in 2018, during a great coaching session with Graham, the team and I at Thompson & Terry Recruitment were challenged where buying local fits into our mission statement.   Quite frankly I was embarrassed; around 60% that we could buy local we did, but 40% we didn't - this DID NOT fit: "Our ambition is to grow together as a business, as individuals and as part of the wider community."   We quickly fixed it, we now buy 100% that we can locally (LinkedIn is a great example of something we need as recruiters that isn't local).   What is the impact? Well, our team (Aoife Griffin, Cara Cullen, Phoebe Aston and I) are completely engaged with 100% of our mission statement and hand on heart we can say this is us!   Not to mention every '£' we spend is recycled many times in the local community and cuts our miles considerably.   But what do our clients do?   Well, whilst we are lucky to recruit for such a diverse group of businesses from FTSE 100 to small independent, all our relationships start in Oxfordshire and 96% of our business is within a 15 mile radius of our office in Abingdon, with over 50% being within 1 mile. With this in mind, our clients share our 'buy local' #values!   So the reason for this post.... What are you values?
