In 2021, a bright pink cap was lifesaving for an experienced swimmer being swept out to sea, after she was spotted struggling from the shore by a passer-by. Matt Rogers, HM Coastguard Team Leader, said: “It’s a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong even for the most experienced and why you should do all you can to help us help you if the worst happens." “This swimmer had done a considerable amount to give herself a chance of being rescued if things went wrong. She not only had a float that was a bright pink colour but was wearing a hat of the same colour too. "It meant our caller could help give us information that enabled the swimmer to be rescued quickly." It is important to be as visible as possible if you decide to swim in the sea. Pinks and oranges make a great option for swimming caps and tow floats, as they are easily spotted from a distance when in the water. Avoid colours such as blue or black, as these can easily camouflage into your surroundings when out at sea or along the coast, making you harder to see in the event of an emergency. If you see somebody in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. #WaterSafety #999Coastguard
