📣Calling all Human Rights Defenders! 🙌Scottish Human Rights Commission are recruiting five human rights defenders to create a resource for people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people, and those who support them. ✔The resource will help people to understand how to measure human rights changes when people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people, have their choices of where and how to live taken away from them. 🔦This work is part of a new Spotlight Project, which measures the progress of Scotland’s journey to end the practice of institutionalisation, by looking at the human rights of those who have experienced it. 🙋♀️Anyone is welcome to apply to take part, but most spaces will be given to people who have lived experience of institutionalisation in Scotland 👇Find out more in the Easy Read recruitment pack: https://buff.ly/3SYIqyh #HumanRightsDefenders #BetterIsPossible #SupportingGoodLives

I want to talk about disability rights. I am currently lobbying in suppport of HB 2449, Reference Title :residental care institutions;inspections. HB 2449 adds assisted living facility managers to A.R.S. 36-424. which requires inspections, suspension of license or revocation of license and report to the board of examiners of nursing care institution administrators. Assissted living facilities need to be licensed and nspected just as care facilities for individuals with with intellectual disabilities and nursing supported group homes are now licensed and inspsected. Their licenses can be suspended or revoked for noncompliance. ANSR is receiving complaints from health professionals. They are being exposed to the toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke when they visit patients in assisted living facilities. This is hazardous to all who suffer from respiratory impairments such as asthma and chronic bronchitis. Reactions can be life threatening. ANSR has recommended that an amendment be added that references Proposition 201, the Smoke-Free Arizona Act, A.R.S. 36-601.01, that prohibits smoking in places of empoyment . Assisted living facilities that have employees are not exempt. HB 2449 has passed by the Committee of the Whole in the House. It has been assisgned to the Health and Human Services Committee in the Senate. HB 2449 has been "held." The Effects of Secondary Smoke On The Sensitized Person, written by Raymond E. Kary, Ph.D. Physicist and Environmental Scientist, has been submitted to members of the Committee. It validates ANSR's concerns. There has been no response.

Today is a very important day for all adults with intellectual disabilities in the state of Massachusetts. Whether you are a person with a disability – a family member or friend - or advocate or other staff sharing your experiences or an organizational representative, your story can advance self-direction. At 1pm today there is a public hearing to consider proposed regulations for Self Determination and Self-Directed Services. The Boston Globe recently published a fantastic op-ed regarding the impact of the Real Lives law on adults with intellectual disabilities. Read the op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/eYc5dn9D Read the Worcester Telegram article profiling Post-22 and the impact Real Lives law implementation might have on programs like it. https://lnkd.in/eSf_8iAp

This is a topic close to my heart and James Melville-Ross has been a strong advocate for people with a disability. When we talk about #disability and #employment we must shift the narrative and talk about the opportunity economic empowerment brings us all. We must talk about #unlockingpotential and remove #stigma. The question should be; - what adjustments does a person need to bring their best self to work? - what value can their lived and different experiences bring? - how do we have policy that #enables employment by way of the fact it fixes key infrastructure challenges around #education, #housing and #transport? Disability in the UK needs a reboot and a joined up approach. #employment is key. As Sir Robin says let’s unleash the talent.
Important point of view from Scope Chair, Sir Robin Millar CBE. ‘Huge talent pool’ missed by failure to recruit disabled staff https://lnkd.in/euRU4vdk

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The theme for NDEAM 2024 is “Access to Good Jobs for All.” Good jobs change lives, and all workers—including workers with disabilities—deserve the opportunity to prepare for, obtain, and succeed in them. In 2023, 22.5 percent of people with a disability were employed in the U.S., which is the highest percentage to date according to the U.S. Department of Labor. At ARC Industries we strive to continue to increase that percentage by connecting individuals with disabilities to employers who want to enrich their workforce by providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to work in safe and inclusive environments, where ARC staff members can provide on-the-job support. For more information on #NDEAM resources visit dol.gov/NDEAM. For more information on hiring events across Ohio to connect employers with qualified applicants with disabilities, check out the link below from Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities
We're celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October! "Ohio is the heart of opportunity and the heart of prosperity, and that includes individuals with disabilities. Every Ohioan should have access to a good job and a path toward economic success," said . Governor Mike DeWine. 🎉 We're excited to host hiring events across Ohio connecting qualified applicants with disabilities to employer partners. 📰 More: bit.ly/4dmj1p2 #NDEAM U.S. Department of Labor

Hello LinkedIn connections in the educational tech space! Worth a quick watch- The DOJs recent rulemaking means public schools, higher education institutions, and any vendor selling digital services to those entities *must* be accessible. Companies will soon start procuring the most accessible vendors, so let's get ahead. Education is near and dear to my heart, and everyone should be able to access all parts. Reach out to help me help make this happen! #a11y
“If you're subject to the ADA Title II mandate, and you contract with a vendor to provide services to the public, those must be accessible regardless of how deep that information goes.” Our Director of Accessibility Advocacy, Corbb O'Connor, unpacked the DOJ’s recent rulemaking under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in a conversation with Chief Accessibility Officer Jonathan Avila, CPWA. Visit our new ADA Title II hub to access the full video—along with actionable resources for state and local government organizations and their vendors: https://lnkd.in/g_aan9n6 #ADACompliance #ADATitleII #A11y
