Staff turnover keeping you up at night? Read my latest blog below.
Did you know that some fitness organizations experience over 100% annual staff turnover? That means hiring an entirely new team EVERY SINGLE YEAR. My latest blog post on ActivSportAdvisory.com takes aim at this silent profit killer, often hiding in plain sight – as advanced as business metrics and data have become, growth and retention are far too often solely customer and revenue focused while ignoring the role of staffing. Read the blog here: https://lnkd.in/gp9Az3d4 The real cost? Staggering: -50-200% of an employee's annual salary lost per turnover -Disrupted customer relationships -Constant rehiring and retraining -Reduced revenue generation A combination of a competitive job market, low wages, lack of professional development, and minimal employee engagement strategies have led the post-COVID fitness trainer/professional to attempt to go it alone or switch industries – and who can blame them? The good news, as my article outlines, is there are smart solutions that can turn this constant challenge around for facilities. As simple as a 10-25% improvement in retention can unlock significant operational savings and stability. Staff turnover isn't just an HR issue—it's a profitability problem. Are you tracking and addressing this critical metric? Can ActivSport Advisory help guide you in building a stronger, more profitable team? #FitnessBusiness #StaffRetention #BusinessStrategy

𝑰𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒈𝒚𝒎 𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈? Are you deciding between hiring 1099 contractors and W2 employees as personal trainers? While both come with their own set of advantages, the decision largely depends on your business model. Hiring 1099 contractors offers more financial maneuverability as you're not responsible for paying employment taxes or providing benefits. This can be attractive for gym owners looking to keep overhead costs low. However, it's crucial to remember that contractors maintain more control over their work environment including their hours, prices, and clientele. On the other hand, hiring W2 employees has its perks as well. Though you'll be responsible for paying employment taxes and providing benefits, the upside is increased control over how your trainers operate within your gym. This could lead to a more consistent client experience and a unified brand image. So, as a gym owner, you've got to consider what's important – do you value financial flexibility or control over client experience more? Remember, there's no 'one size fits all' answer here. The right choice depends on your specific business needs and goals. What has been your experience in hiring 1099 contractors vs W2 employees in your gym?

Do you know what it takes to progress your career as a football fitness coach? When mapping out your career plan, its important to know what qualifications/courses are required depending on the level you are working at. In this article from Matt Springham and colleagues, they highlight the 'typical' pathway for UK-based fitness coaches to move from work experience student to head of department. For some, the pathway is not always this linear in terms of progression. Some are fortunate to start at the top and battle to stay there. Others start down the bottom of the football pyramid and have to work their way up. With new trends and qualification requirements on the horizon, its important practitioners keep up to date with their CPD in order to remain employable. ~~~ If you found this helpful, share the post to your network and follow me James Malone for daily content at 13:00 GMT.

"As a professional in the fitness industry, what do you know now that you wish you had known when you started your fitness career?" ❓️ I stumbled upon this question and felt compelled to answer it to educate more people about this life-changing profession.. Here's my response to it.. "Personal Training is More Than Just Personal Training" It’s more than what we thought it was. As a trainer, we need to undergo certifications to learn the fundamentals, etiquette, standards, and, most importantly, the SAFETY for both clients and practitioners. It’s about consistently elevating your standards through 'continuous' learning, practice, and collaboration with other fitness professionals to provide the highest level of service and the most effective solutions for optimal results to our clients. Personal trainers are the CEOs of their business, the salespeople, the service providers, and the customer care support team. There’s so much more to learn than just training people and watching your sales fluctuate. (That gets boring and repetitive overtime) Like You need to learn: - Leadership - People management - Retention rates - Churn rates - Referral percentages - Customer service - Anatomy & physiology - Body composition - Safety - Industry standards - Etc. It’s NOT about how long you’ve been in the industry. It’s about the level of your commitment and willingness to continuously learn in order to help and impact more lives. My Advice: Don’t train people without proper foundation. Don’t stop learning after getting certified. Don’t settle for being just another trainer. The Formula: LEARN, PRACTICE, COLLABORATE, REPEAT. 🎯 #RaiseYourStandards #PersonalTrainers

Let’s talk staffing issues part 1 😬 Did you know on average clubs are spending 3k or more per employee on acquisition, development and retention? 🤑🤑 Would you believe me if I told you average employee turnover is 💯%? I’ll let you all do the math on that one for a mid to big-box gym. At Coach360 we talk about this a lot. Why? Because there are massive gaps in the market in terms of offerings. For decades, job boards and recruiters have failed at guiding coaches towards the right careers. Why? ❌No engaged community (why is everyone BUT a trainer/coach applying for my job listing?!) ❌No transparency on job benefits (Are these the benefits and working conditions I want?) ❌ No club or studio story (Does this brand match my desired company culture? Is this a long-term fit?) ❌❌❌And the worst is that there are some promising jobs in boutique without proper training. A standard cert won’t get you into any boutique fitness studio for a role. These require lengthy and format-specific coach and teacher training. Al Mendoza you know what I’m talking about, right? We are addressing all of these gaps that continue to promote churn and turnover. We have a solution in Marketplace Coach360. Let’s dive into our staffing crisis story so incredibly captured by my good friend Anne Marie Chaker: https://lnkd.in/gxsBXT4C
