Change is a long game. It doesn't happen overnight, and it's rarely straightforward. But—how we talk about change—matters as much as the change itself. If we want to build communities with the homes, services, and places we love, we need to share the journey in a way that connects and inspires. That's why Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock's Annual Address resonated with me. It wasn't just a list of accomplishments; it was a story about where Saanich is heading and why. 🏠 Housing: The housing challenges we’re facing didn’t appear overnight, and they won’t disappear overnight either. But Saanich is taking meaningful steps forward. This year, the district tripled building permits issued, with nearly a third dedicated to affordable homes. It’s the beginning of something significant—the groundwork needed to make housing accessible for more people. 🚦 Road Safety Action Plan: Saanich adopted its first-ever Road Safety Action Plan this year—the first of its kind on Vancouver Island and one of the few in BC. This isn’t just policy on paper; it’s a commitment to Vision Zero—eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. By focusing on safer streets for everyone, whether walking, biking, or driving, Saanich is leading the way. 🚴 Safer Streets: The Shelbourne corridor transformation is a tangible example. What used to be inhospitable to pedestrians and cyclists is now a welcoming space with safe crossings, bike lanes, and an environment that invites people to explore their community. 🌳 Green Spaces: Parks and natural spaces are the heart of any community. Upgrades to places like Rutledge Park, with its new playground and splash pad, are about more than amenities—they're about creating spaces for memories and connection. The Mayor even joined Cloverdale students in singing Taylor Swift at the splash pad opening—a joyful moment that embodies the spirit of community. 🌍 Climate Action: Saanich is also leading on climate initiatives, adopting Vancouver Island’s first municipal biodiversity strategy and updating the urban forest strategy. Programs like the Climate Action Exemption Program are innovative steps toward reducing emissions and building resilience. What stood out to me most is that these aren’t quick fixes or one-off projects. They’re part of a larger story—a narrative about building a community that reflects our values and meets our needs. Change takes time, and how we share that journey can inspire others to join in and contribute. If you haven’t already, I recommend watching the full presentation: https://lnkd.in/gtucEa27 Local government plays a key role in shaping the places we call home. The work being done today is creating a Saanich where safety, sustainability, and belonging are woven into the fabric of the community—a place where people feel proud to live.
This week I had the chance to deliver the Mayor’s Annual Address. It’s a sort of mini State of the Union, highlighting key 2024 accomplishments and 2025 initiatives. From creating more homes that meet people’s needs at prices within their budgets, to safer roads for everyone to get around, to protecting green spaces and growing urban forest. Your Council and District staff have been focused on the priorities you told us are important to you and your family. You can check out the full Annual Address presentation here: https://lnkd.in/gtucEa27
