As we venture into the new year, there are key animal welfare issues in Canada that demand your attention and support. One of those issues is protecting animals in captivity. Recently, the Government of Canada introduced Bill S-15, a groundbreaking legislation that phases out the captivity of elephants and great apes in Canada. If passed, this bill will put an end to the suffering of these animals and criminalize the use of elephants and great apes for entertainment purposes such as rides, tricks on demand and circus-like shows. Humane Canada is working to strengthen this bill and lobbying government to add big cats, such as lions and tigers, to this legislation, who often suffer in private ownership and roadside zoos across the country. We’re working under a real deadline here. What does that mean? 2024 is a pivotal election year, and we need bills like this one to pass before it arrives, or our progress will be lost. Your donation fuels our advocacy efforts and saves animal lives. Let’s make 2024 the year we build a brighter, safer future for animals in Canada. Make a gift today, any amount big or small will help us make progress for animal welfare in our country. Give a gift: https://lnkd.in/dP2HX2vi

Helping stray dogs in your area can be a rewarding experience. Here are some ways you can assist them: 1. Provide Food and Water: Set up feeding stations in safe areas. Ensure the water is clean and fresh, especially during hot weather. 2. Shelter: Create or provide access to shelters for protection against harsh weather. 3. Medical Care: Contact local veterinarians or animal welfare organisations for medical assistance. Organise vaccination and deworming drives in your area with the help of local NGOs or Vets 4. Sterilisation Programs: Support or organise sterilisation drives to control the stray dog population. Collaborate with local animal welfare groups or veterinarians. 5. Adoption and Foster Programs: Promote adoption through social media, local events, and community boards. 6. Volunteer: Volunteer at local animal shelters or rescue groups. Help with feeding, caring, and rehabilitating stray dogs. 7. Raise Awareness: Educate your community about the importance of caring for stray dogs. Organise awareness campaigns and events. 8. Collaboration: Work with local authorities and animal welfare organisations to create a sustainable plan for stray dog management. 9. Report Abuse or Neglect: Report animal cruelty or neglect cases to local authorities or animal welfare organisations. 10. Create a Network: Build a community network of like-minded individuals to help stray dogs collectively. Use social media platforms to share resources, updates, and success stories. By taking these steps, you can make a significant difference in the lives of stray dogs in your area. #ccc #straydogs #rescuedog #animallovers #doglovers #dogshealth #instadog #straydogsterilisation #dogcare #dogage #straydogs #doghealth #dogsofinstagram #dog #pethealth #doglife #petcare #doglover #doglovers #dogstagram #doghealthtips #dognutrition #doghealthcare #dogs #doglover #rescuedogs #savelives

Sign up for my bi-weekly Animal Welfare eNewsletter to receive information and thought leadership: https://lnkd.in/gqZBJTeA As the recent Shelter Animals Count report shows, dog euthanasia is 31% higher than in 2022 and has risen above euthanasia rates of 2018 and 2019. But the reasons behind this aren’t entirely clear. SAC data, as well as individual data sets from large, government shelters show there are fewer ‘owner surrenders’ but more dogs entering as lost or stray. We can hypothesize that the increase in stray intakes may be due to the fact that some shelters reduced their open hours and made it more difficult for people to surrender their pets. The SAC data also shows transfers to local rescues and transports to out-of-area shelters and rescues continue to decline nationally. For large, under-resourced shelters that relied on transporting or transferring 10% or more of their pets, this decrease has resulted in more crowded shelters, fewer overall outcomes, and in many cases, more euthanasia. Finally, we know that dog intake is just now rising to pre-pandemic levels. We have not seen a massive national increase in dog intake, even though certain shelters (esp. in large cities and places where shelters were already struggling with capacity) are seeing higher-than-usual intakes. All of this leaves me with more questions than answers: - What is the impact of the policies put into place in many shelters at the start of the pandemic? i.e. fewer hours, limited access to pets, and increased barriers to outcomes? - Are rental fees and restrictions having the same or a greater impact on families with big dogs? Is the rental/HOA problem getting worse or staying the same? - Did we lose so many staff and volunteers during the pandemic that we’ve forgotten how to operate with this volume of intakes? Are we losing ground because we are currently unable to compete with the fast, fun, and easy online puppy sales marketplace? We need to figure it out Shelters need to take a closer look at their data to better understand what is happening in their shelter and more importantly, to hypothesize about why they’re seeing a particular trend. By taking a data-informed guess as the starting point, shelters can test solutions that can solve the problem. If you make a hypothesis and test a solution, if it works, you’ll have a clue that your guess was right! A treasure trove of ideas In 2022, Julie Levy and Kristen Hassen created the Maddie’s Million Pet Challenge Big Dog Masterclass because we saw signs in the data that things were about to get tougher for big dogs in shelters. You can access the entire online conference and watch 20-minute presentations by the experts helping to get big dogs adopted. Tell me your ideas Beyond broader social and economic factors, what do you think is causing the increase in dog euthanasia in shelters nationwide?
