📣 In 2022, The Court of Appeal ruled the Government’s planning definition of “gypsies & travellers” in 'Planning policy for traveller sites' (PPTS 2015) was unlawfully discriminatory. A new version of Planning policy for traveller sites' has now been issued with an updated planning policy definition of “gypsies & travellers”. 🔽 https://lnkd.in/eN54nGpp Our Marc Willers KC of Garden Court Chambers appeared for the successful appellant in Smith v Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities & Anor [2022], instructed by Keith Coughtrie of Deighton Pierce Glynn Ltd. 📣👏👏 I’m delighted to report that yesterday the government issued a new version of ‘Planning policy for travellers sites’ with a planning policy definition of ‘gypsies and travellers’ that included those ‘persons with a cultural tradition of nomadism or living in a caravan’. Having fought with my brilliant legal colleagues and brave clients for many years for a planning policy definition that recognises and respects the fact that living in caravans is an integral part of the traditional way of life of Gypsies and Travellers it is wonderful to see this positive step finally be taken by our new government. But we should also recognise that this positive development would not have happened if it had not been for the excellent work done by NGOs who provide invaluable support to Gypsy and Traveller people including Friends Families and Travellers, London Gypsies and Travellers, the Traveller Movement, Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group and Southwark Traveller Action Group - as well as the parliamentarians who advocate for Gypsy and Traveller rights. Of course, positive planning policy can only go so far in addressing the urgent need for more Gypsy and Traveller caravan sites and I remain convinced that we need to reinstate the statutory duty on local authorities to make adequate provision in order to properly address the acute shortage of sites. The new version of ‘Planning policy for travellers sites’ can be found here gov.uk/government/pub…

🇦🇺 Celebrating Australia Day: Reflecting on Our Journey 🇦🇺 January 26 marks Australia Day, a day of unity, reflection, and celebration of our nation’s rich history and diverse culture. This date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 at Port Jackson, New South Wales, marking the beginning of modern Australia. Over the years, it has evolved to symbolize our shared achievements, the vibrant multicultural society we’ve built, and the unique spirit of our country. However, Australia Day also holds deep significance for First Nations peoples. It is a time to acknowledge the long and complex history of Indigenous Australians—the world’s oldest living culture—and reflect on the challenges they have faced since colonization. As we come together to celebrate our identity, it’s important to honor our diversity, recognize the contributions of all Australians, and embrace the opportunity to build a future rooted in inclusivity and reconciliation. Let’s celebrate with pride, reflect with humility, and move forward with hope. 🌏💚 How are you marking Australia Day this year? Share your thoughts below! #AustraliaDay #Reflection #Unity #FirstNations #Reconciliation #Diversity #Pride

Just read that Geelong council have unfortunately voted to bring back Australia Day festivities. The debate around Australia Day has such a simple solution!! Change the date to exactly 1 week earlier. 19th January. That way we acknowledge that the 26th represents trauma, displacement and death to First Nations people. The new date is a recognition of this, and allows everyone to celebrate Australia as a nation while keeping our end of January public holiday. And the best thing about the 19th January is when written as a date, it will always show the year Australia as a nation was officially created 19/01. So many years from now, no matter what year we are in, 19/01/## will always show 1901 - to whatever year it is. Then we should also introduce a public holiday in July during NAIDOC week that celebrates the history of this land prior to 1901 and how hopefully we enter into a treaty for now and beyond. 19/01: Australian day to celebrate the Commonwealth of Australia. NAIDOC public holiday in July: celebrating 65,000 years of history, culture and knowledge. Combined: we move together as a country side by side with our past, present and future. Learning and developing together from all the good and bad that has occurred over the generations. I don’t see why this should be so hard to do!

'DT: Fake Fijian taxi driver accused of raping flight attendant arrives at court' Fijian MP and Opposition Shadow Minister for Justice Ketan Lal’s statement highlights a critical issue that strikes at the heart of Fiji’s values and global reputation. The alleged act against a Virgin Australia crew member is a stark reminder of the importance of public safety and the urgent need for proactive measures to protect both locals and visitors. Fiji’s warmth and hospitality are pillars of its identity, cherished by its people and integral to its thriving tourism industry. Such incidents undermine these values and cast a shadow over the nation’s image. Ketan Lal’s call for stricter police patrols, especially during major events, is both timely and necessary. Enhanced law enforcement in high-risk areas like nightlife zones can act as a strong deterrent, ensuring public safety and instilling confidence in locals and tourists alike. By addressing these challenges collaboratively, Fiji can uphold its legacy as a welcoming and safe destination for all.
Fijian MP and Opposition(G16) Shadow Minister for Justice (ketan.lal@legislature.gov.fj) 🎓 Graduate Civil Engineer(BE. Honors) currently a politician ✅️ NOTE : THIS PAGE HAS POLITICAL/PERSONAL VIEWS
Statement The alleged heinous act committed against a Virgin Australia crew member on New Year’s Eve is deeply shameful and an affront to our values as a society. As Fijians, we pride ourselves on our warmth, hospitality, and respect for others. Such acts not only violate these principles but also threaten the very foundation of our tourism industry, which is vital to our economy. This incident must serve as a wake-up call for all of us. It underscores the urgent need for stricter police patrols, especially during major events and festive occasions like New Year’s Eve, when thousands are out celebrating. Law enforcement agencies must intensify their presence in high-risk areas, such as club zones, to ensure public safety and prevent such appalling incidents. The government must take immediate action to restore public confidence and protect Fiji's reputation on the global stage. We must work together to ensure that Fiji remains a safe destination for our people and the many visitors who come here in good faith. End
