This past week, the Streetplus Company LLC team worked diligently to ensure our sidewalks and curb lines remain pristine. After the success of the Manchester Rotary Club's Cruising Downtown event, they swiftly restored the downtown area, making it a welcoming space for our visitors, residents, businesses, and property owners. Beyond trash removal, Streetplus also tackled much-needed weed abatement around tree wells on Elm and nearby streets and removed additional graffiti from city light poles, sidewalks, electric boxes, and more. A big thank you to Streetplus for your continued efforts in keeping our downtown district clean and inviting!

My heart sinks every time I see graffiti polluting our shared spaces – and there's been a spike in this kind of vandalism in and around the city centre of late. It's not just ugly and off-putting, it's a constant drain on Council resources to clean up the resulting mess. The presence of graffiti, even a small amount, instantly overwhelms the combined efforts of Council, local business owners and the vast majority of residents to keep the city centre tidy, attractive and appealing to visitors. That's why we will always prioritise prompt remediation but, as more and more graffiti crops up each week, it's a strain to keep up. This latest spate of tagging undermines our collective sense of community safety and sends a terrible message to locals and visitors alike. It's also notoriously difficult to police because acts of vandalism like this are opportunistic by nature and the damage can be done in a matter of seconds, more often than not under the cover of darkness. We also don't want – and couldn't possibly afford – the installation of CCTV cameras surveilling the city centre all day and night. Since we can't realistically expect Police or Council officers to catch these taggers in the commission of each and every crime, we can only push back by holding each other to account and making it clear that the costs and consequences are unacceptably high. Shop and restaurant owners pay the price of these selfish, destructive acts when fewer people feel comfortable venturing out, especially at night. Hardly a week goes by without hearing this directly from affected businesses. Workers in the city centre (myself included) hate to see it. Ratepayers foot the bill of the constant clean up efforts when those resources would be far better spent elsewhere – like protecting the harbour through riparian planting. And the ugliness diminishes our shared sense of well-being and security. It erodes pride of place – and it needs to stop.

"Call for better street lighting to make Blackpool town centre safe after vandalism at Sainsbury's and The Hive" There is often a direct correlation between poor street lighting in an area and instances of crime/antisocial behaviour. And yet, whether it be due to lack of funding, environmental concerns or other reasons, the quality of street lighting in many areas continues to be sorely lacking. Zeta Specialist Lighting provides adequate street lighting solutions that are cost-effective and eco-friendly, allowing for your streets to be sufficiently lit without any potential downsides. Centre for London’s recent report sheds light on the persistent issue of street clutter in the capital, terming it a 'chronic' problem that tarnishes Londoner's quality of life, hindering living and working experiences. At HOLBA, we're actively addressing this concern, particularly with initiatives targeting dockless bikes, striving to optimise #WestEnd pavements for the benefit of visitors, workers and local businesses. Streetsblog NYC's article covers our testimony in last week's DSNY hearing, focusing on the negative impacts to public space from trash bins on sidewalks. Open Plans, Inc. agreed with our solution to site waste containers on the street rather than bins on the sidewalk. Anna Humphrey from Center for Independence of the Disabled, New York noted how trash bins on sidewalks can lead to accidents or injuries. Anna Sacks from Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (MSWAB) asked why the focus was on trash and not organic waste given that is what brings rats and odors. We believe waste containerization should be designed to reduce waste, improve streetscapes and help local businesses thrive, and improve labor. See our recommendations for 1-9 unit buildings here: https://lnkd.in/en7aTMKA Thanks Kevin Duggan for the thorough reporting. #wastecontainerization #zerowaste https://lnkd.in/epZA4b38

Every year I find the following situation problematic. I’ll notice others shake their heads with a bit of disappointment & some frustration, and then move on. #accessibility is important. It helps folx feel connected in public spaces, it gives them independence to do what they need, and makes their lives easier. There are a variety of reasons why someone needs to park in these spaces. Parking lots have few #accessible spaces, so why do we continue to do things like this? (Pictured, snow plowed parking lot chose the accessible parking spot to pile the snow - in at least two of the accessible parking spots I saw at The Shops at Morgan Crossing ). Can we start thinking about folx who need these spaces? Can we find more creative ways to remove snow, rather than piling it in spaces designed to help break down barriers?) #morgancrossing #dobetter #accessibilitymatters

As a landlord, are you expecting your property manager to make you aware of the potential use of methamphetamine in your commercial or residential property?, but are you expecting them to do so without any means to do so? Landlords rely on their #propertymanagers and #realestateagents or their own inspections, which provide an inspection 'window' of approximately one-half hour per 'quarter' and this inspection is well notified and provides tenants the opportunity to tidy up. Let's be fair and say that most tenants are are good tenants and do not indulge in drug use or manufacturing, but you would unfortunately be wrong, statistics of testing of wastewater back this statement up. It can cost up to $50,000 to repair a home that has been badly contaminated by meth. So how does a landlord, agent, property manager or #Airbnb host, have the ability to monitor methamphetamine use in their assets without contravening privacy? www.methalarmswa.com #reiwa, #harcourts, #raywhite, #Proffesionals, #ljhooker, #realmark, #firstnational, #Century21, #Peardgroup, #heritagerealty. #4salesold, #Elders, #acton, #theagency, #liminospropertygroup, #passmorerealestate #coulsonandco, #empireresidentialproperty, #360realestate, #avenueonepropertygroup, #urbanhabitat, #departmentofcommunities, #kreativepropertygroup, #Paddingtonrealty, #Carrieprosserrealty, #Danafulton, #fairstreetrealty, #drivenproperty, #VUErealty, #Gemproperty, #Nextvisionrealestate, #meth; #drugabuse, #methcooking, #rossrealty, #Arenarealestate, #Bourkes, #pureleasingcentral, #Vividproperty, #HEREproperty, #oneillrealestate, #Investorsedgerealestate, #burgessrawson, #dfrcommercial, #raineandhome, #ayers, #wapolice, #corrections; #perthairport, #mcdonalds, #hungryjacks, #wendys
