Education in Africa is important for ita growth but what we need more than anything is the blue collar education that will empower our youths for capacity and adaptability in the digital age. There is a need for a complete review of the curriculum at the secondary and post secondary level of education so it can meet the global digital age standard. Currently, the gap is wide in most parts of Africa and we need to bridge it to take our place in the global marketplace. #AfricaDay #DigitalEducation #Entrepreneurship

I have been thinking: Stage 2 of my chat about opportunities. What stops us taking up opportunities? Number one reason I imagine is 'self doubt'; 'I am not capable of that'; 'what about if I fail'. The Tertiary Education Commission did research on school leavers and their transitions into the 'big wide world'. https://lnkd.in/gMdVg8RG. One surprising result they found from the research, is that 'lack of confidence' in making the leap from school was one of the biggest barriers to young peoples transition experience, up there with cost of study, lack of connections with their desired pathway, and systematic biases such as streaming. How can we help young people with this 'lack of confidence?' Well we can be (the research tells us) a champion for a young person. A champion is someone who provides guidance, support and personalized information. What we know from the OECD research is that young people connecting with people from the 'world of work', often, throughout their schooling, creates connections that aid in a young persons confidence with the transition from school to work. Could you offer to be a champion through your local schools? Both organisations I work for MyMahi and Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council are working at connecting young people with possible pathways for their future. Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council is working with Inspiring the Future Aotearoa an initiative through Tertiary Education Commission to promote industries through schools. You can register online with them to offer to be a volunteer. All it involves is an hour or so of your time to speak in small groups to young people about the story of how you got to where you are in your career. Kids love the story of how you may not have known, but by taking a step - the path became clearer. Really important work to help with.

We wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the amazing work that these groups have been doing over the past few months through their webinars. - Our Global Trade SIG, led by Reeza Awoodun, has fostered insightful conversations with overseas organisations and educators to talk about AT practices and challenges. - Our Research SIG, led by Rohan Slaughter, has started exploring the potential for research on certain types of AT to benefit neurodiverse learners. - Our Workplace SIG, led by Joe Mitchell, had its first meeting to discuss all things inclusive in employment. - Our Education SIG, led by Myles Pilling, had another productive meeting explaining the power of multidisciplinary teams to support SEN in education. - Our Visual Impairment SIG, led by Richard Holmes, and our Publishers SIG, led by Sam Cock, joined forces to discuss website accessibility best practices. Having been hearing the students practising their presentations for this session, I know it’s going to be a treat! Come hear directly from the students from Werribee Secondary and Kingsville Primary on their student action projects. Day 3: First Day at my Placement School. The first day meeting my tiny giants was dramatic in many ways including - the huge language barrier I was faced with, the uncertainty the children had whether to feel safe or not, the horrible classroom environment and the rain!😂 Listen to bits and pieces of the gist in the video attached but bear in mind that these three big lessons hold true for me after that first day’s experience: 1. Resilience in Adversity: Overcoming challenges like classroom conditions and unexpected rainstorms taught me resilience in no small measures. 2. Community Engagement: Living within the community and engaging with local leaders helped foster support for subsequent educational initiatives in our school. 3. Flexibility and Adaptability: Managing limited resources and cultural barriers emphasized the importance of flexibility in career pursuit. P.S - I had so much fun having this moment of reflection with my children. As a matter of fact, they mentioned things I didn’t even remember.
