Strategy & Storytelling for Social Good: I help social impact orgs be seen, attract more supporters & further their cause so they can do more good in the world.
Great front page story in today's Los Angeles Times by Jessica Garrison, touting the dangers of a local community having no objective, local media outlets to report the news. I've always sung the praises of local media for multiple reasons: 1️⃣ It's the best way for local residents to get news about their local community. 2️⃣ Very likely, no other media is going to cover local stories such as city council and school board races, hometown heroes, or community events such as children's story time at the library or the annual car show. Social media notwithstanding, people do rely on their local newspapers for information. 3️⃣ Civic engagement depends on a well informed citizenry. It's much harder to get local news about your town if there's no media to cover it. 4️⃣ In times of crisis, the local media may be the only ones who can get to the story and report to residents in real time. Harken back to the tiny local outlet, Lookout Santa Cruz, which won a Pulitzer for helping residents navigate rainstorms and flash flooding: https://lnkd.in/gCETiicm 5️⃣ From a media coverage standpoint, placing stories in local media is much easier than placing stories in bigger regional and national media. And that coverage gets read by the people who matter to the story. Those local stories can sometimes even be parlayed into coverage by the bigger media. I've asked this before and I'll ask it again: Does your community have a local paper and if so, do you read it? Link to LA Times article in comments below. #mediarelations #localnews #publicrelations

Gearing Up for the ‘Great American Eclipse’: Public Safety Strategies with Social Media Intelligence The April 8th total solar eclipse promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, attracting a surge of visitors to jurisdictions along the path of totality. While exciting, this influx can strain local resources. Here's how law enforcement agencies can leverage social media intelligence to ensure public safety and a smooth experience for all: Identify Potential Hotspots Partner with tourism boards and social media platforms to analyze travel trends and identify areas likely to see the most visitors. This allows for targeted resource allocation. Monitor Online Chatter Track discussions about the eclipse on social media. Identify potential concerns like traffic congestion, illegal camping, or drone disruptions. Address these proactively through public advisories and targeted outreach. Collaborate with Public Encourage residents to share information about road closures, parking restrictions, and designated viewing areas. This fosters a sense of community and helps manage expectations. Real-time Traffic information Use social media to gather insights around real-time traffic situations so you can deploy resources effectively and suggest alternative routes. This can help minimize congestion and frustration. Monitor for Emergencies & Threads Track social media for reports of unsafe situations, threats to public safety, accidents, lost children, or medical emergencies. This allows for quicker response and intervention. Monitor the public's sentiment closely By monitoring public sentiment in detail, public safety agencies can accurately assess whether a tense situation exists or may arise. In this light, it is important to also distinguish "sub-sentiments", such as: fear, hatred, confusion, etc. This can be used, for example, to assess whether a peaceful meeting turns into a riot. Debunk Misinformation Address any post-eclipse rumors or misinformation circulating online. This helps maintain public trust and a positive experience. Gather Feedback Encourage visitors to share their experiences on social media. This feedback can be used to identify areas for improvement for future events. By using social media intelligence, law enforcement and public safety agencies can anticipate challenges, proactively address concerns, and ensure a safe and memorable eclipse experience for everyone.
