Celebrating old ties, with new growth! Our visiting delegation from Sister City Vasto, led by Mayor Mr Francesco Menna, joined our Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas, Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Bruce Reynolds, Councillors Catherine Lezer, Clyde Bevan (Friends Restaurant) Bevan and Cr Raj Doshi, and our CEO Michelle Reynolds down by Lake Vasto today to plant trees in honour of the 35-year connection between our Cities. Separated by 13,164 kilometres, Vasto and Perth share deep cultural and heritage links, and the new trees symbolise the strength and new growth still to come in our valued relationship. The Lord Mayor touched on the economic and migrant connections for Perth’s Italian community at last night’s Civic Reception, where the Vasto delegates were joined by around 75 members of our State’s Italian community. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the influence the community continues to have in our great City of Light. For more details on the Vasto visit, head to: https://lnkd.in/g2MVS_dH

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. National Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to acknowledge, learn about, and reflect on the experiences of Indigenous peoples across what is currently known as Canada. This day celebrates the diverse and fundamental contributions First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples have made in various fields, including the visual arts. As GOG grows and improves, we remain committed to fostering open dialog on systemic injustices and seek to create meaningful change in the arts and culture sector through shifting misrepresentations and redistributing power. The recognition of Indigenous experiences and achievements as well as the work of systemic change is not limited to a single day. As settlers of this land, consider highlighting Indigenous joy, history, art, and culture today and every day. Linked here is a collection of resources including readings, projects, and Indigenous organizations that you can support in various ways: https://lnkd.in/gJiWar5F

Palermo is set to welcome its first synagogue in modern times, marking a significant step in reconnecting the city with its historic Jewish roots. The initiative, led by the Municipality of Palermo in partnership with the Archdiocese of Palermo, the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) and the Jewish community of Naples, aims to transform the historic Oratory of Santa Maria delle Grazie (located in the heart of Palermo's former Jewish quarters) into a vibrant place of worship and cultural exchange. A memorandum of understanding was signed during a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla, Archbishop Corrado Lorefice, and UCEI President Noemi Di Segni. The agreement paves the way for refurbishment to begin in 2025. Once completed, the synagogue will serve as a beacon of cultural unity and a platform for combating antisemitism while preserving the city's diverse heritage. This milestone is part of Palermo's ongoing efforts to promote peace and mutual respect among communities, particularly in light of rising global tensions. As Mayor Roberto Lagalla noted, this project sends a powerful message of solidarity from a city historically known as a crossroads of cultures and faiths.

The National Park Service will award $3 million in grants to 13 Tribes and 21 museums to assist in the consultation, documentation, and repatriation of ancestral remains and cultural items as part of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Major revisions to NAGPRA from from the beginning of the year went into effect. These revisions were designed to address loopholes, speed up returns, and give institutions five years to inventory and prepare all returns. Importantly, the updates prioritized tribal consultation for determining cultural affiliation. https://lnkd.in/ezPGvZrT ProPublica's reporting provides interesting context to the new rules. https://lnkd.in/gWTRud4v
