📍 "You cannot manage what you cannot measure" 📍 In the early days of my facilities management career, I encountered a challenge that completely shifted how I viewed operational efficiency. At the time, I was responsible for managing a large commercial building with rising utility costs. We were spending excessively on energy, but without any data to pinpoint the problem areas, it felt like navigating in the dark. 📍 We decided to implement an energy monitoring system that tracked real-time consumption data across different sections of the building. The results were eye-opening. 📍 We discovered that a particular wing of the building was consuming far more energy than others – it was an HVAC problem we would have never identified without the data. With this insight, we were able to recalibrate the system, significantly cutting costs while improving overall energy efficiency. 📍 This experience taught me an important lesson: in facilities management, you cannot manage what you cannot measure. Whether it’s energy consumption, water usage, or asset performance, data is at the heart of making informed, cost-effective decisions. It’s how we ensure buildings are not only operational but sustainable and efficient in the long haul. 📍 In today’s world, where sustainability is no longer a luxury but a necessity, data-driven decision-making cuts across every aspect of facilities management—from energy efficiency, to asset maintenance, to optimizing space, waste management and improving occupant satisfaction. Having accurate data not only helps us identify problems but also allows us to forecast trends, mitigate risks, and ensure that we're meeting our sustainability goals. 📍 The ability to measure provides a clear path for management, and it's the difference between guessing and knowing.
