As part of a collaborative effort with the Utility Exploration Center (UEC), a middle school in Roseville has embarked on an educational journey focused on utilities and environmental sustainability called "Take Action." The program's name speaks for itself. UEC staff work with 6th to 8th graders at Chilton Middle School, engaging them in hands-on learning to understand the impact of their actions on utility systems and the ecosystem. Students then create campaigns based on their newfound knowledge, using various art forms to express their ideas.

We love as a company mentoring the next generation of engineers and surveyors!! What a great experience with two of our young engineers speaking to the future graduates about the opportunities that await them in water resources , development engineering and renewable energy !!! #watermanagement #renewableenergy #landdevelopment #civilengineering #surveying #electricalengineer #interns #projectmanagement #sustainabledesign #futureengineers
Last week was an incredible experience as K+W's CEO Chuck McCallum and Project Manager Christian Bowen, P.E., proud Cal Poly SLO alumni, returned to campus to share their expertise and mentorship with the Society of Environmental Engineers (SENVE), inspiring the next generation of leaders. Along with Project Engineer, Karen Holcombe, the SLO alumni delved into the vital topic of sustainability in civil engineering and land development, shedding light on Kier + Wright's expanding role in water resources engineering and management across California. Additionally, we shared our involvement in renewable energy development through our affiliate company, KWRE. The highlight of the evening? Discussing the sustainable design practices we're implementing in current land development projects, from enhanced stormwater treatment to innovative black/grey water systems and green roofs. The students' thoughtful questions and engagement truly made the night memorable – here's to shaping a greener, more sustainable future together! #CalPolySLOAlumni #Mentorship #EmpoweringStudents #BackToCampus

Introducing the importance of Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is crucial for nurturing a generation equipped to address environmental challenges. While EE focuses on raising awareness and fostering stewardship, ESD takes a broader approach, empowering learners to tackle systemic sustainability issues. To effectively integrate these concepts, various frameworks offer structured approaches, from interdisciplinary methods to community engagement initiatives, ensuring students develop the necessary competencies for a sustainable future. Let's explore some suggested frameworks for integrating EE and ESD into educational systems in our latest blog ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/dUNgcQe6)

KEEP is always accelerating sustainability in our schools! Green Team Mini-Grants START PLANNING! It’s time to start planning for the fall round of Green Team Mini-Grants! While these student-run grants are an important opportunity for young people to take the lead in planning and implementing projects to reduce their school’s carbon footprint, educators are a critical element of making students aware of the grant, encouraging them to apply for it, and finding time for students to work together on implementing it. Whether it’s a project to make the school more energy efficient, educate classmates about an environmental issue, or come up with their own creative way to reduce emissions, encourage your students to submit a project idea for a Green Team Mini-Grant! https://lnkd.in/g6YzQZXg

Distance teaching as a way to drive emissions reduction was attempted in Brazil. Will a full shift to distance learning lead to environmentally friendlier alternative? A quantity called Emergy is defined to make quantitative assessment. It turns out that distance teaching actually requires more emergy than regular campus learning. Emergy unit per unit time is defined as Emergy (energy, material or information flow) x UEV where UEV is Unit of Emergy Value to produce one unit of a given resource. The unit can be Joule, gram, cubic meter or dollar of a given resource. So the UEV accounts for all resources and energy used to deliver a product. Physical schools and distance teaching were compared with electricity and workbooks in building systems to show that they are higher for distance teaching/learning. This just indicates that teaching and learning have to be optimised for minimising overall emergy with on campus and distance teaching. Brick and mortar schools will still be needed. Externalities include interpersonal interactions and their benefits. #sustainability #campus #climatechange #distancelearning #decarbonise #sustainabilityeducation #highereducation #climatesolutions #netzero https://lnkd.in/dtakGPfu

Better Planet Schools is an environmental education program designed for children aged 7 to 11. Schools can sign up for a year (three academic terms) and gain access to our interactive website, exclusively designed for participating teachers. Each year, schools choose 3 'modules', with each module representing a term's work on a new environmental topic. These modules contain lesson plans, presentations, and plenty of ideas for taking action as a school to address key environmental issues. Flexibility is key! Use the materials as part of your curriculum or for your eco club activities. Even using some resources to help children take action for the environment makes a difference. And it works! Schools in our pilot project saved 10-15% of their energy usage through behaviour change alone when engaging in pupil-led energy saving! Plus, participating schools get access to free additional content, including mini modules, advice guides, and entry into a termly prize draw when submitting end-of-module reports. Watch our introductory video to learn more about Better Planet Schools! https://lnkd.in/gcEGPNb8 #EnvironmentalEducation #EcoAction #EducationForSustainability
