We are incredibly proud of our employees who consistently excel both on and off the clock. One shining example of this dedication is Ray Molina. Ray is a familiar face in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries department. He has worked in Parks for more than 16 years and enjoys his role in Park Development. Ray is a driven by passion and family. But it’s what Ray does in his spare time that takes his love for competition and sports to a new level. One day, while taking kids to school, he stumbled upon the All-American Speedway in Roseville. Fascinated by the speed and camaraderie, he decided he wanted to get behind the wheel in the world of NASCAR's F4 division series. "It's the thrill, the adrenaline," says Parks Inspector Ray Molina. "It's why I race." The F4 series takes drivers on a high-octane journey around a short track, testing their skills and nerves with speeds reaching up to 70+ miles per hour. "It's always fun to be competitive and win," Ray says with a smile. "Anyone can get out there, find their limits.” Ray bought a car from a local driver and dove headfirst into the world of racing. “For me, the allure of cars packed together, side by side, and bumper to bumper is just irresistible,” he adds. The first few years were a learning curve. After power steering failures and his car being pinned to the wall, Ray decided to take a break, but he just couldn’t stay away. Following his return to the track eight years ago, Ray has won an impressive five championships. But racing isn't just about the thrill of victory; for him it's a family affair. With his son Matthew (who also works for Parks) following in his footsteps, racing has become a bond between the two of them. Sharing the track with Matthew, they’re an impressive duo. "One year, we were racing together, and my car flipped over," Ray recalls. "Matthew stopped his car and came running over to make sure I was okay. I told him to get out there and win and he did. It was an emotional victory for both of us." For Ray and his loved ones, racing isn't just a hobby—it's a way of life. With their team, fittingly named One Piece Racing, their goal is to bring their cars and themselves, back in one piece. "Racing has a huge family atmosphere," he reflects. "Everyone is willing to help each other, and you feel like you have someone to lean on." Ray is also very encouraging to anyone who may be thinking about getting behind the wheel, “Just get in and do it, and don't be defeated. This is something that I don't ever think I will stop doing." THE MUSCLE BOYS. By Peter M. DeLorenzo Detroit. Beginning in the late 50s and running through the mid-70s, sports car racing - particularly here in the U.S. - was captivated and dominated by V8-powered machines that barked their intent at race tracks all over the country. Sure, back in those days, SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) events were heavily populated by small-bore sports cars like Austin-Healeys, Triumphs, MGs, Minis, 356 Porsches and many other brands. And there was no question that they provided the backbone of SCCA racing back then. But starting in the late 50s with race-prepared Corvettes, and then fueled by the emergence of the Shelby American Cobra, and on to the USRRC, Trans-Am and Can-Am days, the real action was with the big-bore machines. I vividly remember seeing the crowds gravitate to the fences when those V8s fired-up on the false grid. They couldn't really help it, because the sound was guttural, menacing and mesmerizing all at once. Standing among those cars on false grids all over the Midwest with our "A" Production Corvettes - Waterford Hills, Grattan, Mid-Ohio, Nelson Ledges, Milwaukee, Blackhawk Farms and, of course, Road America - was an in-period treat that I couldn't get enough of and will never forget. And besides the spectacular noise coming from those machines, the sheer speed was awesome to behold as they devoured every race track they visited. And the legendary names that wheeled these machines were a mix of Hall of Famers and hard-scrabble drivers who wouldn't settle for anything less than the fastest, baddest V8s available. The legends were present and accounted for: Ken Miles, Dan Gurney, Roger Penske, Mario Andretti, Jim Hall, Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, Jackie Stewart, Peter Revson, John Surtees, Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Mark Donohue, Swede Savage, Sam Posey, Milt Minter, Ed Leslie, Dr. Dick Thompson ("The Flying Dentist"), Allen Grant, Jerry Grant, et al. And, of course, my brother Tony and his teammate Jerry Thompson. This list of drivers - which I have affectionately dubbed "The Muscle Boys" - were just the tip of the iceberg. There were countless others who wheeled and manhandled their brutal machines at tracks all across the country. They were visceral, no-compromise machines that captivated the hearts and minds of racing enthusiasts, and if you've ever been to a vintage racing event, the same is true today, if not more so. Hellooo Everybody! After a brief hiatus from working on the W.I.N. Racing Motorsports Plymouth drag truck, which allowed us to focus on other required efforts, we are getting back to it. The team attended the Empire Dragway banquet to give support to the track and the accomplishments of fellow racers. It was a very nice evening. While the team was all together, we had a “performance improvement “meeting and hatched a plan to step up and make some real power. From that meeting the plan was solidified to add more boost and see how low we can go…This effort comes as a true team effort with Mike Haynes offering up the use of his High Helix supercharger (we typically run a std. Helix unit) and Billy Leverentz performing a repair and freshening to the unit and I acquiring the parts and pieces to put it all together. With this we can make more boost (only looking to add 10psi) The HH offers the ability to run lower blower RPM but greater boost pressure resulting in cooler air charge temps (denser air) which in turn means more fuel required…netting more power, wow this gets fun fast. Because we run quality parts (BAE, Bryant, Veney, R&R, BRT, Neal Chance, Lenco etc.…) the supporting cast along the rest of the equipment is up to the task, so with the help of the entire crew we should make some steam! With that said it is Engine time... We have one to sell, one to put together, one to finish and one to start. We are still mapping out our season schedule with a desired 10 event season. Our first outing though is on April 6, “Racer’s for Life” Charity Car show. It is taking place at BW’s Restaurant, 11070 Perry Rd. Pavilion NY. Should be a good way to get the race season started. Please come visit. Aside from that the intent is to participate in 4, Q32 races at Empire Dragway, plus some of the other quick classes have (4.70Thunder, Empire Supercharged Bracketeers) but some outside the area events would be nice as well.
