Many school districts struggle to hire special education professionals. Excellent article. Yet, most continue to blame the standardized test for biased admissions. What a joke. It’s clearly been the system all along. A test is a neuteral vehicle that cannot discriminate on its own. It’s the admissions system that needs to change. If people like Akil Bello,who obfuscate the real issues for their own self-interests, would work to make real change, maybe we could eventually have an equitable system eventually. #education #collegeadmissions #teachers #success #educators #diversityequityinclusion

A deliberate choice not to recruit equitably in-state is unconscionable, and if that’s correlated to a history of racial exclusion it’s much less than an excuse—it’s a compounding crime. OTOH, deciding how to balance resident and non-resident net tuition has fewer obvious, one-size-fits-all solutions, especially if those extra non-resident dollars are invested in forms that help the state residents or coffers. ‘Bama would have a moral access claim over UVA if (for example) it were meeting full need for its lowest-income students and UVA was instead using its in-state preference to subsidize a larger number of relatively affluent in-state residents.

The Biden-Harris Administration has proposed new regulations that enable federally funded TRIO programs to serve Dreamers. In Washington, we serve these students in our Gear Up program. I'm honored to have played a small role in advancing this policy change as a member of the TRIO subcommittee of the recent negotiated rulemaking committee. https://lnkd.in/gvmdcGyW • Increase Dreamers’ access to higher education through the federal TRIO programs. The TRIO programs are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities. The proposed changes would expand eligibility to include students without immigration status who are enrolled in or seek to enroll in a high school in the United States, territories, or Freely Associated States. The expansion in eligibility would apply to the Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Educational Opportunity Center programs which serve students at the elementary and high school levels. These changes would increase high school completion, college access, enrollment, completion, and overall earnings of students without status. #TRIO #highered #college #equity

Ethnic diversity in schools in England remains a challenge for all of us. Our new discussion paper is informed by National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER)'s research and by practical feedback from CST member trusts and other sector colleagues about their approaches and challenges. It seeks to offer some concrete steps that school trusts can make to take real ownership of encouraging diversity, and to encourage innovative thought about new approaches to recruitment, retention and progression and, importantly, governance. Embracing diverse perspectives is your key strategic advantage.

To me, the most harmful aspect of the proposed cuts to Maryland's community colleges is that with all the gains we have made as a state on addressing racial disparities and leading with equity, it does the most damage to economically disadvantaged students with the greatest educational needs. With all the policy goals in mind on reducing poverty, this harms the very people who are trying the hardest to become productive Marylanders and join the middle class. Here is my commentary from The Daily Record that explains why. #MDGA24
