Challenge I am issuing a challenge to all my fellow business owners. I urge you to have an open discussion with your team members about voter registration and participation. In my own internal survey, I found that only 60% of employees aged 18-31 were registered to vote or intended to do so. Many cited common excuses, such as “my vote doesn’t really count” or “It won’t matter if I vote.” I spoke with my team about the importance of voting as a fundamental civic duty. Men and women fought and died to protect this right. To encourage participation, I offered paid time off for employees to register, and I told them they could not come to work on Election Day unless they had voted. It’s crucial that we all exercise our right to vote, regardless of political affiliation. I researched voter turnout in my county and found that only 60% of registered voters participated in the 2020 election compared to 63% in a neighboring county. It is time for the silent majority to step up and fulfill this critical civic responsibility. I hope my fellow business owners will join me in this challenge to increase voter engagement among our teams and communities. An informed, participating electorate is essential for a healthy democracy.

Wisconsin election law allows nursing home residents to vote who have a diagnosis of cognitive impairment (dementia, brain injury, etc.). Only a court or judge can determine (adjudicate) a resident is “inelegible” to vote, not a doctor, diagnosis, etc. The vast majority of nursing home residents will never be seen by a court or judge to determine ineligibility to vote, (unnecessary for services and is expensive). Impact? Unknown. Wisconsin election commission does not pursue. In 2023 there were approximately 17,000 nursing home residents in Wisconsin. That does not include assisted-living, group homes, etc. How many cognitively impaired residents will be voting in the 2024 election with the “help” of facility staff who may biased, untrained in procedures, and without oversight? We want people residing in Wisconsin facilities to vote who are legally eligible. What do you think? #wisconsinelections #dementia #nursinghomes #electionintegrity

Calendar tip: If you're US-based, here's a few things to consider for the coming months, especially if you're in a leadership role: 📮Make sure you're not booking anything mission-critical on Election Day (November 5th) or the days immediately following. You want to make sure that folks have time to vote if they haven't yet by Election Day, and you can also assume some level of distractedness for yourself and your team during that day and in the immediate days following. There's a chance we won't know electoral outcomes, locally and nationally, for many days after 11/5. 📮Could you close your office on November 5th to support your staff to have time to vote or get involved in civic activities as they see fit? 📮 Could meetings the morning of November 6th be optional? Some folks might need solo time to process whatever is happening (or might have been up late glued to election results) and others might love the chance to be in community with their colleagues. This is especially important if you're doing mission-driven work or if your work is directly connected to electoral outcomes. 📮Finally - if you haven't yet donated or volunteered in this election cycle personally, consider now is the time to get involved. I'm happy to share ways I'm engaging if that's helpful - my comments and DMs are open! Leadership is busy, and it's also true that this election matters deeply. It's time to make time (and/or open up that wallet). ❤️

I live in California. Harris will carry California. Why should I bother to vote? Even though Harris will unquestionably carry California, there are a lot of important reasons why you should still vote: State Ballot initiatives Ther are 10 initiatives on the California ballot. They address important issues. Among other things, they include an amendment that will enshrine the right to same sex marriage into the State Constitution, raising the minimum wage for the whole state of California, a bond to raise money to build a repair K-12 schools, and a proposal to make certain low level drug and theft crimes felonies again. If you don’t vote you leave these decisions to others. Control of the House of Representatives Even if Harris wins the Presidency, there’s a lot of things she won’t be able to do if the Republicans control the House of Representatives, like they do now. There are four very close House races in southern California that, if the Democrats win, it could flip the House to the Democrats. If you live in any of these districts, you vote could determine who controls the House. The districts are 27 (Santa Clarita, Palmdale, Lancaster), 41 (parts of Riverside County including Corona and Palm Springs), 45 (Northern Orange County, excluding Anaheim) and 47 (coastal Orange County). L.A. City Initiatives Ther are 5 initiatives on the ballot affecting the City of Los Angeles. They include issues like strengthening the Ethics Commission and creating an independent commission to draw the council districts, instead of having the council itself draw the districts, which allows the incumbents to hold onto power. If you live in the City of L.A., you can have an impact on how the City is governed. L.A. County Initiatives There are 3 initiatives on the L.A. County ballot. The most important would expand the Board of Supervisors from 5 to 9, and provide that the County Executive be elected, rather than appointed by the Board. This would have a huge impact on the how the County is run. The National Popular Vote Still Matters In 2016, Hillary Clinton lost the Presidency even though she won the national popular vote by over 4,000,000 votes. In 202, George Bush won the Presidency even though Al Gore won the national public vote by about 500,000 votes. It’s entirely possible that Harris could win the national public vote and lose the election in the Electoral College. If that happens again, the larger the margin, the greater the willingness to consider reforms to the electoral college

For Harris to really excell and win, the strategy is simple. She doesn't have to win all the counties, she just has to draw enough votes from each to net a large enough win. Large cities tend to lean heavily democrat even in severely GOP heavy states. As cities tend to hold the majority of a population of any given state, this can work in her favor. If she draws away 500 to 1000 votes from Trump in each county outside of cities, she can amass a significant overall impact leading to a win. Thankfully, Trump is doing a wonderful job of pushing voters to come out to vote against him, and in many cases making GOP voters just want to stay home, thus hurting down ballot candidates. The GOP also hurt themselves with previous rhetoric in multiple ways. Anti mail ballot, killing a huge number of older folks via inaction with covid (a demographic typically conservative leaning), as well as mobilizing the next point. Add in that in many areas, women's rights are literally on the ballot, and by all accounts, those propsitions drive turnout from unlikely voters in favor of the right to choose. This also translates to the candidates.

We are in full-swing election season with less than 60 days until the U.S. Election. Good policy is good for business and employees. What is your business doing to mobilize your employees to vote? What are you doing to prepare yourself, your family, and your neighbors to vote? It can be as simple as sending out a “no meeting” block for election day so employees can go vote or rethinking how you schedule shift workers. If your corporation doesn't have a plan, help put one in place or put one in place for your team. #vote
