Currently discarded as waste, stormwater amounts to 53.1 billion gallons per day—equivalent to 93% of the total water withdrawals for municipal and industrial uses in 2015. This vast volume could potentially meet most of the U.S.'s usage demands. 📍 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 #Texas Texas leads the nation with the highest estimated annual urban runoff potential at approximately 6.96 billion gallons per day. Coastal areas, where about 37% of the national total runoff occurs, demonstrate significant potential for stormwater capture, with cities like Houston showcasing some of the highest runoff potentials. 🛠️ 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 "We need to elevate the role of stormwater capture across the country as part of the toolbox to help alleviate the increasing stress on our water supplies," states Bruk Berhanu, Ph.D., a senior researcher for the Pacific Institute. 🚧 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Capturing and utilizing stormwater is not without its challenges. Issues include legal complexities over water rights, the need for coordinated effort among multiple agencies, and the practical limitations of long-term storage—balancing when stormwater is available and when it is needed. 💡 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 Addressing these challenges will require robust funding for research and strong collaboration between the public and private sectors. The future of stormwater could be a cornerstone for sustainable water management.
