Congratulations to Library Supervisor Connie Gomez on being recognized as the city's Employee of the Month for September 2024! Connie's dedication to providing top-notch assistance to patrons who visit the Seguin Public Library makes her a true asset to the city organization. Her nomination highlighted two recent incidents when she came to the rescue to help citizens with medical situations at the library. After an elderly patron fell in the parking lot and gashed open his arm, Connie jumped into action using a first aid kit to wrap his wound until he could see a doctor. A couple days later when a man was found unconscious on the bathroom floor, she remained calm under pressure, staying with him until EMS arrived. The person nominating her stated, "There are many ways Connie cares for those who come through our library doors - whether they need knowledge in many forms or a place to connect with other people through an event, she is a big part of why the library is the heart of Seguin." Connie is pictured with Assistant Library Director Hannah Farmer, Library Director Silvia Christy and City Manager Steve Parker.

Most public librarians not working exclusively in Children’s or YA can count a good number of older adults among their regular visitors. So how can libraries reach beyond the surface level in serving this important constituency in a just and equitable manner? A newly formed task force within ALA hopes to address that question. The Elder Justice Task Force got its start from conversations held after a session on services to older adults at the ALA Annual Conference last summer. https://lnkd.in/gyKFGsqp

Butler County’s public libraries have long been pillars of community knowledge and resources. They serve as hubs for information, education and social connection. As community needs evolve, library systems adapt to meet the demand while struggling with some of the same challenges they have faced year after year. https://lnkd.in/e5ubwTBw

It's a chilling statistic, but it's all too believable that Colchester Library has seen over 50 anti-social behaviour incidents in the last three months including an assault on a librarian. I've spoken with libraries across the UK who have recently seen an increase in anti-social behaviour in their branches. It's disappointing that libraries are having to resort to measures such as body-worn cameras and security guards, but they are becoming vital safety measures for staff. Little Green Button can also be useful in helping staff members receive assistance from colleagues quickly. Libraries should be a safe place for everyone to visit - and of course, staff shouldn't have to face the threat of verbal or physical assault at work. Local authorities should be taking action to keep libraries at the centre of our communities by making more funding available for security measures and deterrents. On a more positive note, Webster Public Library, one of our customers in New York, have used our Big Green Buttons (the physical version of our panic alarm system) to improve patron service. When a patron needs help with a computer issue, they simply hit the Big Green Button and a staff member comes to their aid - ingenious! I hope that UK libraries can use our technology in this way more than they have to use it to get assistance during anti-social incidents or violence. Read more about Webster Public Library here:

Books with mature themes will soon be relegated to an adults-only room in most public libraries in Kootenai (ID) County. The private room is a requirement of an Idaho law passed last year, and the Idaho-based Community Library Network board voted to set up such a room at the Post Falls Library. The library board also voted to stop children’s Community Library Network library cards from accessing other library systems that may not be subject to the Idaho law. https://hubs.la/Q033D-CM0
