CONGRATULATIONS to two City of Seguin employees who received a MAD (Making a Difference) Award on Monday afternoon from City Manager Steve Parker ~ Tommy McCormick (Water/Wastewater Dept.) and Kenneth Soefje (Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation)!
This duo was honored for the exceptional teamwork they demonstrated to ensure specific electrical and water meters were in place at all Seguin fire stations for the installation of gear extractors. The new gear extractors, which are part of the SFD's cancer prevention program, helps remove toxins and carcinogens from firefighters' bunker gear after a fire.
According to the company that installed the extractors, the City of Seguin was one of the best prepared municipalities they’ve ever worked with.
Tommy and Kenneth's contributions make a difference (and a positive impact) to the health and safety of Seguin firefighters.

I love to hear this kind of congratulations. We just don't hear it often enough. I'd love to work with a company that recognizes when you work hard. Way to go city of Seguin and way to go guys.
We are really pleased to be the sponsors of the all-important Healthier Firefighters category in this year’s Excellence in Fire and Emergency Awards.
The entry deadline is 20 September, so get your admission soon! The award will be given to the company, fire service or individual that has demonstrated a science-based solution to reducing exposure to contaminants on the fireground, decontamination systems/facilities processes evidenced to reduce exposure to carcinogens, or education/research projects to further understanding of contaminants and avoidance of carcinogens. That’s a long way of saying: evidenced ways of reducing the carcinogenic danger to firefighters.

I had a blast presenting my and Dr. Uwe Reischl’s research and patent-pending respirator device for Wildland Firefighters at Boise State University’s Graduate Showcase last month.
I’m excited to continue perusing this idea, alongside my thesis on wildland firefighter recruitment and retention policy. None of this would be possible without BSU’s school of Population and Public Health and the gracious help and guidance of my chair, Uwe Reischl, MD, PhD, who has carried the project forward.
The health needs of this population are vast. An updated background section is below:
“The size and severity of wildfires have been on the rise since the 1980s. In the USA alone, over 66,255 wildland fires occurred during 2022. Thousands of firefighters were needed to manage these fires to protect local communities. The occupational health and safety risks associated with wildland firefighting are significant and numerous. The most common are physical injury, exposure to smoke and other particulates, and heat stress. This project aimed to develop a prototype technology that can protect wildland firefighters from excessive exposure to smoke and particulates while reducing heat stress.” (Reischl, Honn, 2024).
The CVI Action Plan is here! Driven by the expertise of our grantees, this plan charts a powerful course to reduce violence and foster safer communities.

Sports dogs often face similar injury patterns due to repetitive activities and muscle use, with common injury sites including the shoulder, spine, iliopsoas muscle, and feet. Quick, accurate diagnosis is crucial to minimize long-term damage and avoid unnecessary treatment. While evidence is limited, strategies from human athletes can inform dog therapy. Effective training and rehabilitation rely on teamwork between owners, trainers, and clinicians. In the last edition of the National Poultry Newspaper, you can find an interview about the latest HPAI outbreak in Australia to members of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, A/Professor Jenny-Ann Toribio, Professor Michael Ward and myself as Lecturer of Poultry Science. This outbreak has unusual characteristics, so the industry needs to remain vigilant.

The decrease in experienced leprosy specialists is becoming a prominent issue. For more than two decades, there has been a drop in specialised expertise. However, there is optimism as collaborative efforts by organisations like TLM, ILEP, WHO, and GPZL are joining forces to uphold essential skills and cultivate a fresh cohort of leprosy professionals.

Spot on !
We need the people affected by leprosy, health workers and experts to come together to achieve the elimination as interruption of transmission of Leprosy as per the new global strategy! (https://lnkd.in/gzJK6WPC )
This will to progress further than elimination as public health problem (reducing prevalence to less tha 1/10,000 at national level) which India had achieved way back in 2005.
