Wartburg College and the University of Iowa are excited to announce a new accelerated 4+1 program for students seeking a bachelor's degree from Wartburg and a Master of Arts in library and information science from the University of Iowa. Opinion: Mid-tier universities don't get enough credit. 🎓 I loved my undergraduate and graduate experience at the University of Kentucky (UK). I firmly believe that choosing this school for both my BS and PhD set me up for long-term professional success and better financial security. I am now a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley. Although technically a public school, Berkeley has established itself globally as a top-ranked institution. I have loved working in this environment and the advantages it offers. But as an undergrad at UK (the school, not the country), I had excellent professors. It was fairly easy for me to find long-term research opportunities. Plus, I was living in an affordable city in my own state, where scholarships were generous, and I could stay connected to my community. At UC Berkeley, with so many ambitious undergrads, competition for research experience is fierce. Students and postdocs struggle to make ends meet in the expensive Bay Area. I think more young people should consider the many advantages that "mid-tier" public schools can offer in the pursuit of higher education. More educational pathways to career opportunities are good (as students are showing us!) … even if the pathways are shorter than our traditional packages of 2 - 4+ years, fewer than 90 - 120 things called credits, are based on needed competencies and skills and applied experience, and are recognized regardless of source. #AllLearningCounts
