Whenever I feel anxious about my career in the UK, I come back to this picture.
There I am, spending a quiet afternoon with a resident at the senior citizen care center where I was an Activities Coordinator. We're working on a colouring book while he gives me an impromptu lecture on rocks—he was a Geography professor years before the onset of dementia. He always found me to share geological trivia, whether I was ready or not!
But I'd always listen. It was the easiest thing to do 💕.
I loved my work, not just for the chance to use my skills, but for being part of a community filled with genuine love and care.
Here are some things we'd do together:
--> Morning exercise: usually the residents imitating my funny little dances.
--> Group lunches: mandatory for anyone who walked through the doors during lunch hour.
--> Evening sit-downs: pausing activities to gather, have tea and snacks, and chat about our day.
--> Constant banter: always working around the residents, never isolated in offices. We ensured they always felt surrounded by loving people, except when they needed rest or solo-time.
There was never a dull moment. 💫
We created a home for the residents and for ourselves. 🏡
All my work experiences and roles I've aimed for have a recurring theme of care and compassion. As a consultant, I gravitated toward organisations focussed on counselling and mental health. My passion is making people feel part of a community and never alone in their struggles.
Now, even in a sales role, I work for a brand built on 'care,' focusing on mind-body connection, self-care and ethical production.
At 24, I understand my values and the work cultures I want to be part of.
With this clarity, I'm exploring opportunities to develop and join communities where I can make a difference.
❓ What are some of the values that have helped you decide what you want to do in life?
