I researched the average tenure of staff for a number of CPA firms in NC. Great data available via LinkedIn. So many firms have c1 year, a high amount definitely less than 2. It’s then getting rarer as you go above 2-3 years. At this point, I’m obviously talking more about firms with 20-30+ staff members. Anyway, the firm I’m hiring for averages just under 5 years. And they recruit a lot of accountants at the start of their career. Do they pay the highest in NC? No. Are their jobs different to the jobs at other CPA firms in NC? No. So, why do people stay? After all, they could probably get paid a few $$$ more elsewhere. They stay because of the culture. They stay because people get treated well They stay because the path to promotion is there. In fact nearly half of the partners grew from within, had career breaks or maternity leaves. This firm care about you. They reward performance in the job, not who plays golf with who. They stay because the team is good. They hire well. The Managers have teams who do their jobs well. They get to hire really talented people, then the business makes sure they're looked after and they stay. I’m currently hiring for them in Tax HNW roles. Managers, Senior Managers. Deeply saddened to hear about the loss of a young and talented CA at EY due to work-stress. As students, we often dream bright futures at big firms, but the reality can be quite different. Long hours and overworking are often celebrated, and some even take pride in working during vacations or while unwell. Every firm presents its own challenges, and experiences can vary greatly from one person to another. It’s common to encounter both supportive and difficult bosses within the same organization. My advice to newcomers in these large firms is to recognize your physical and mental limits and prioritize self-care by learning to say "No!." There will always be other opportunities. Remember, life is the most valuable thing we have, and no job is worth sacrificing it for. #MentalHealth #BigFour

I was interviewed at one of the Big 4s just after I cleared my CA exams and the interview surprised me. I recently read about late Anna Sebastian's unfortunate untimely death! This reminded me of my own interview with the partner for last round of interview where the partner asked me questions like - I hope you are comfortable with late night work, we usually work till 1:30 a.m., I hope your parents are okay with late night work, etc where she kept emphasizing on how late night work was so important for this Big 4 firm. I realised when the partner herself is making it clear in the interview that you have to work beyond 12 hours a day, it's surely going to be the ingrained work culture here. And fortunately I got another offer with better work culture and I opted out of this role in Transfer Pricing. How can any company be okay with imposing such culture on their employees? If you are in a company with this culture and you are not enjoying it, it's high time to opt out. There is no better sign and time than NOW.
