How many of you have heard of Hailey National Park? The Ramganga National Park? At this point, I understand your confusion. Asia’s first national park was known by these names before it was renamed after one of the greatest naturalists ever. Although Edward James Corbett worked tirelessly to capture footage of the incredibly shy-tigers on cine film, it is also well-known that he was called upon by local authorities to get rid of man-eating tigers and leopards. For those that don’t know, tigers are often reticent creatures, that are a keystone species. We undertook two safaris, sighting six tigers during two different sightings. The footage of a mama tiger playing with her cubs, all of whom were between 7-8 months, was incredibly thrilling to watch. I understand that there is a fear of the tiger and that nothing can justify human casualties that happen as a result of these animals. However, multiple instances of poaching had almost wiped out the Bengal Tiger population in Corbett. The bio-diversity in Corbett National Park is worth preserving. All tourists to the park must go beyond fear and paranoia, to understand this incredibly important concept. As for the importance of the tiger, I will be sharing my understanding on this topic in the days to come…. #jimcorbett #HaileyNationalPark #RamgangaNationalPark #TigerConservation #WildlifeProtection #SafariAdventure

“Captive Conservation” AZA, ZAA, EAZA and Roadside Zoos - what’s the difference? The AZA and ZAA tout that their accredited facilities are held to the highest standard in the zoological world, whose members follow “best practices”, where safety and security are of the utmost importance to protect guests and staff, and to ensure the welfare of their animals. But what does “accreditation” really mean, and how do these facilities compare to roadside zoos? Join Erik E. Crown (Director/Producer of Harambe) and I as we delve into the wide-ranging standards within the zoological world, as well as discuss the “United States Department of Agriculture” (USDA) and “United States Fish and Wildlife Service” (USFWS), the organizations entrusted with the responsibility of enforcing said regulations and laws within the zoological world. Our engaging conversation will offer a unique first-hand look from behind the Zoo's iron curtain. https://lnkd.in/eBFUs9bs #captiveconservation #AZA #weareaza #ZAA #EAZA #roadsidezoo #TheConservationGameMovie

On Jan. 16th, following a lengthy hearing, O’ahu First Circuit Court Judge Gary W.B. Chang dismissed our elephant rights case to free Mari and Vaigai from the Honolulu Zoo following a 45-minute hearing. While we obviously disagree with Judge Chang’s decision, we appreciate how probing his questions were, his philosophical approach to the arguments overall, and the fact that he heard arguments at a very early stage in our clients’ case. Judge Chang’s thoughtfulness is an indication of how seriously courts are now taking the issue of nonhuman animal rights. That said, Mari and Vaigai are entitled to have the injustice of their imprisonment remedied through the writ of habeas corpus, which is meant to safeguard the freedom Mari and Vaigai have been denied. We plan to appeal Judge Chang’s decision because the law and the science are clear: habeas corpus isn’t limited to humans, and Mari and Vaigai will continue to suffer until they’re released from their unlawful imprisonment in the Honolulu Zoo and can regain their freedom in an elephant sanctuary. In November, the NhRP filed a habeas corpus petition in the O’ahu First Circuit Court on behalf of Mari and Vaigai. The first litigation of its kind in Hawaii, the NhRP’s habeas corpus petition has the support of world-renowned experts in elephant behavior and cognition. Mari and Vaigai were born in the wild in India, taken from their herds when they were young, and imported to the US in 1982 and 1992, respectively. Both were given to the municipally-owned Honolulu Zoo as a gift from the Indian government and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The City and County of Honolulu, Department of Enterprise Services, its Director Dita Holifield, and Honolulu Zoo Director Linda Santos are named as respondents in the lawsuit. It's #WorldOtterDay today! Here are some of my favourite otter facts: 🦦 There's 13 different species of otter, the smallest of which is the Asian small-clawed otter. 🦦 The collective noun for a group of otters is a lodge or a romp, but in the water they are often referred to as a raft! 🦦 Although you may know that some otters sleep holding hands, when an otter pup is small, the mother will hold it on her belly to keep it from floating away. 🐿 Red Squirrel Appreciation Day 🐿 Red squirrels are an important part of the UK’s wildlife, but their future is under threat. On Red Squirrel Appreciation Day, we look at the issue of ensuring their survival through invasive species management. While red squirrels are native to the UK, the grey squirrel is not. Originally native to North America, grey squirrels were intentionally introduced to a number of sites in England and Ireland between 1876 and 1929 for ornamental purposes. After successfully establishing viable populations, they began to spread and cause declines and local extinctions of native red squirrels across the UK and Ireland, outcompeting them for food and habitat and spreading deadly squirrel pox. The attached video is a beautiful reminder of my collaboration with always-amazing Kelly Salisbury regarding this topic. Behind the scenes, we worked together on creating an engaging script (''regal reds'' will definitely go down in history) and then filming a video in the middle of a VERY noisy zoo. Despite all of that, Kelly was an absolute professional, not only because she could memorise all that text in a short amount of time, but because she could adapt to distracting sounds, and judge which ones were worth powering through as they would not be too disruptive in the final cut that we put together with Marketing department. - As always, Kelly, you a star and a wonderful ambassador for animals, both exotic and native! https://lnkd.in/eZqEpGj8 #redsquirrel #squirrels #nativewildlife #ukwildlife #invasivespecies #conservation #modernzoos #biaza #eaza #filmmakers #presenting #ukanimals

3moI haven't been to the zoo in quite a while and I need to get back. I first visited it back in the 60s when the animals were in cages located in another part of town.
