🌍 Last week, the Uzbekistan Territorial Development Forum brought together over 200 experts and policymakers from across national and local governments to discover and discuss practical solutions for building green and climate-resilient cities in #Uzbekistan's emerging market economy. The City Resilience Program led one of the sessions that explored how responsible urban expansion, pedestrian and mobility planning, and transit-oriented development can be applied in four Uzbek cities. Participants used CRP's #CityScanmaps, which showcase insightful analytics to help cities understand their unique socioeconomic, geophysical, and climate conditions. Through hands-on group work, we focused on how to create green and dense neighborhoods, and how to integrate resilience into planning. Local urban planners from Uzbek cities gained important perspectives from global external experts, while city officials grappled with the on-the-ground realities of cities undergoing rapid urbanization. Together, we worked to bridge data gaps, identify urban resilience challenges, and share solutions grounded in both local context and global expertise. The insights from the Forum will directly influence the ongoing policy dialogue on territorial development in Uzbekistan and support the implementation of existing and the design of new lending operations. As cities around the world tackle climate change, initiatives like this provide valuable, actionable steps to build cities that are greener, more livable, and resilient for future generations. 🌱🌆 #ClimateResilience #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning #GreenTransition #LowCarbon #UrbanDevelopment #ResilienceBuilding SECO Economic Cooperation and Development Bundesministerium für Finanzen The World Bank Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR)

🇺🇿 Over half of #Uzbekistan’s 37 million population currently lives in urban areas. By 2050, this number is projected to grow by 50%, surpassing 25 million. 🌐 To help the country effectively address the challenges and opportunities of rapid urban growth, we support the government through Bank-funded projects and technical assistance. Our efforts focus on developing urban infrastructure, creating green and climate-resilient cities, and building capacity to deliver municipal services. We also assist in implementing urban and territorial planning reforms. 🤝 This week, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan and our international partners, we organized a forum focusing on the government’s efforts to adapt regions and cities to #climatechange, enhance #DisasterResilience, and advance reforms in territorial development planning. 📺 Watch this video featuring my brief intervention that explains the purpose and expected results of this event. 🔎 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eNvzucEB #UrbanDevelopment #ClimateResilience #WorldBankforUzbekistan #WBforUZ Christoph Pusch Mohamed Nada Axel Baeumler Anita Ellmauer-Klambauer Lola Vico

Urban-rural linkages in Africa are a significant challenge, with rapid #urbanization and rural-urban #migration putting pressure on urban and peri-urban areas. UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and partners implemented the "Leaving no space behind: strengthening urban-rural Linkages (URL) in Africa" project in four countries: #Cameroon 🇨🇲 , #Guinea 🇬🇳 , #Nigeria 🇳🇬 (Niger State), and #Tanzania 🇹🇿 (Zanzibar). The project aimed to enhance the capacities of policymakers and change agents at all levels to collect and use evidence for fostering cross-sectoral, multi-level frameworks, strategies, and action plans for integrated and #inclusive territorial development. The project involved the development of context-specific normative toolkits, capacity-building sessions, technical dialogues, and advisory services to stakeholders. The project also provided an overall framework for the review of the #National #Urban #Policy (NUP) for each country and in the data collection process at a local level. The project aimed to strengthen the synergies between urban and rural communities and spaces, promoting integrated territorial development and achieving global goals. The 12th World Urban Forum, held in Cairo from 4th to 8th November, brought together global urban development leaders to address challenges and advance the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda. World Urban Forum 12 Egypt UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Like many cities around the world, South African cities face significant challenges, including the growth of informal settlements driven by increased migration. A 2022 SACN study revealed that one in five urban residents lives in these settlements, often lacking dignified living conditions and access to essential services. However, progress is being made through efforts to upgrade informal settlements, providing residents with adequate housing, reliable access to water and electricity, and nearby amenities such as schools and clinics. The Informal Settlements Upgrading Programme, led by the National Department of Human Settlements, is one of several initiatives driving this change. On a global scale, the renewed focus on transforming informal settlements has been reinforced by the Global Action Plan: Accelerating for Transforming Informal Settlements and Slums by 2023, which serves as a framework for sustainable urban development. South Africa's Department of Human Settlements has been a key partner in shaping this vital initiative. 🌍🏙 #SustainableCities #UrbanDevelopment #SDGs #NewUrbanAgenda
