Short-term gains are tempting, but what actions will truly secure your business's long-term success? It's easy to chase immediate results, but without a clear long-term vision, you might be setting yourself up for future challenges. Take, for instance, when I worked with one of BHP's subsidiaries. The mining company's processing plant was assessed on tons of clean coal produced. They'd then pack it onto the trains to transport it to the port, only to find the moisture had evaporated. The coal became denser and packed down in the carriages, making them unloadable unless money was spent shaking the carriages to break up the coal and prise it loose. This issue arose because the short-term goal of maximising clean coal production (assessed based on weight) led to siloed behaviour, neglecting the logistics of transportation and unloading. The processing plant achieved its objectives to the detriment of the logistics budget in terms of time and money. Short-term goals are only helpful if they don't create siloed behaviour and support long-term objectives. As a business process consultant and coach, I help businesses develop and implement balanced scorecards that ensure short-term actions support long-term success. By focusing on a comprehensive strategy, we can align efforts across the board, fostering growth, innovation, and a sustainable competitive edge.
