Transitioning from Recreational to Competitive Swimming Many swimmers who have honed their skills in the local pool eventually start eyeing the competitive scene. But transitioning from recreational laps and lessons to swim teams and meets requires mental and physical adjustments. If you're considering making the leap to competitive swimming, here are some key tips: Gradually increase distance in practice to build endurance for longer competitive races. Refine stroke mechanics to develop efficient technique for races. Work on speed and efficiency. Analyze your skills and pick target events that play to your strengths. Shore up weaknesses through focused drill work like underwater kicking to improve times. Research local teams with a supportive culture and knowledgeable coaches. Attend a few swim meets as an observer to learn protocols and get comfortable with the environment pre-competition. Envision your "why" - is it for fitness, fun, or future college athletics? Define your goals. Be patient with yourself during the challenging but rewarding transition period. The pool provides lifelong enjoyment, even if you just stick with recreational swimming, but competitive swimming builds grit and skills for those up for the challenge. How did you transition into competitive swimming? Please share your experience and tips below!

The Math Behind Olympic Swimming: Turning the 2024 Games into a Family Learning Experience As we approach the 2024 Olympic Games, families have a unique opportunity to blend excitement with education. My latest blog post explores how parents can use Olympic swimming events to engage children in practical mathematics. Here's what you'll find in my day-by-day guide: • Breakdowns of each swimming final from July 27 to August 4 • Age-appropriate math activities tied to specific events • Insights into how elite swimmers apply math in training Did you know? In her book "Just Add Water," Katie Ledecky reveals she swam about 1,920 miles annually as a teenager. That's 135,000 laps a year! Sample activities include: • Calculating average speeds in the 400m Freestyle • Comparing split times in the 200m Individual Medley • Analyzing stroke counts in the 100m Butterfly By connecting math to the thrill of Olympic competition, we can help children see the subject's real-world applications. This understanding can boost motivation and dedication to learning. Whether your child dreams of Olympic gold or simply enjoys watching the games, this guide will deepen their appreciation for both swimming and mathematics. Check out my full blog post to discover how you can turn Olympic viewing into a fun, educational experience for the whole family as we watch these athletes race for gold! I help swimming coaches build race-winning skills in a systematic manner. Follow for posts about how to develop the most important skills as quickly and easily as possible.
Resisted swimming is usually reserved for fast swimming. I love using it with drills, and I think it accelerates skill development. It provides swimmers clearer feedback about what they’re doing, and it requires more precise execution. That’s EXACTLY what we want when developing skills. Resisted swimming works in combination with just about every drill designed to improve just about any skill. It’s all about loaded appropriately and ensuring that swimmers are challenged, yet able to be successful. That added challenge is going to promote learning in a way that the doing the drill by itself won’t. And swimmers are going to develop some strength and fitness at the same time. What’s not to love? Give children the time they need to develop themselves. ✅ It is important to regularly give children some free time 'during' swimming lessons so that they can experiment. 💦 It is precisely by experimenting that they push their own boundaries from which they learn a lot! "So let it go sometimes, dear swimming colleague." That's one of my messages for swimming instructors... 🏊♂️ The message for all swimming parents: Enjoy this development and play time, because it may sound cliché, but the time of young children flies by! Children do not like parents who are in a hurry with pressure to perform. "Yes, I want my child to quickly obtain a swimming diploma", yes, that is often what most parents want... But do the children also want to obtain a swimming diploma quickly? If you are 'lay back' as a parent, you will notice that children often learn faster. 😉 The greatest gift 🎁 you can give a child is your conscious attention to play in the pool with your child in addition to swimming lessons. Play games together and let him/her play freely and, as a parent, slow down a bit during the swimming process. ;-) #metsuccesopzwemles

Did you know that swimming is fantastic for developing your child's coordination and motor skills? Here’s how: 👉 Hand-Eye Coordination: Swimming involves precise movements, such as reaching and pulling the water, that help improve hand-eye coordination. This skill is crucial for everyday activities and other sports. 👉 Fine Motor Skills: The detailed movements in swimming, like finger placement and kicking techniques, refine fine motor skills. These small, controlled motions enhance your child’s ability to perform tasks that require precision. 👉 Rhythm and Movement: Swimming requires synchronized movements between the arms, legs, and breathing. This rhythm helps children develop better overall coordination, leading to improved balance and agility. The skills learned in the pool don’t just stay there—they translate to better coordination in everyday life. So, dive in and let swimming work its magic on your child’s development! #TheBoostFlipper #swimming #SanDiego #California #ChildDevelopment #SwimmingSkills #HandEyeCoordination #MotorSkills #HealthyKids #SwimTraining

We can all probably agree that swimming is not only a vital life skill, but also a hugely enjoyable sport for kids to get involved in. Not much has changed there but swimming aids have evolved. This innovative bit of kit bit makes children’s swimming experience more fun, and give adults more peace of mind. There are several different types of swimming aids, but a good one will foster confidence in the water for toddlers and older kids too. SwimFin helps non-swimmers float, and will help them get used to the principles of swimming. However dont forget that constant supervision is still required at all times.
