It's been a hectic week at #PAS2024 and #Ecosperity. We took some time to 'wine🍷' down with our members, together with partners and friends from Asia Community Foundation, Accelerate Indian Philanthropy (AIP), and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and our host Anthonia HUI to discuss the Frontiers of Global Development. Some great highlights: ❓ We asked ourselves: What is the role of #philanthropy in building #TheFutureWeChoose? This will be continuing question we aim to tackle. Several zingers from our speakers Ashish Dhawan, Mary Ann Tsao, Mike Boots, Laurence Lien and Robert Rosen: ➡ A lot of #philanthropy starts with getting pissed off. Do we see the injustice around us? Is anyone doing anything? ➡ There is no path to #social and #environmental stability without #Asia ➡ There is a lot of attention on Asia; now is the time to turn this buzz into #action ➡ This is year of the "Rise of the Rest!" Where do we go from here? ➡ Roles remain for #GlobalFunders: lots of #publicgoods are still not funded by local philanthropy, but are necessary and foundational for local social #impact ecosystems to grow. Pact for the Future, a road map to help in the achievement of the #SDGs by 2030! Someone asked, why only 17% of the 17 SDGs on track in a period of 10 years yet the Goals are to be achieved by 2030? Then a thought come to my mind... Imagine you have 3 kids in class, all with the same teacher. 1 scores A, the ther C and then the other D. This we can understand and we have seen it happen. With this one, all students (Member states) have scored a D, so I asked myself but why.... Cutting the long story short, here with my observations. 1. Too much talks and too many conferences going on around the world with no clear action plans, follow through mechanism and responsibility taking (Go talk and leave don't bother what follows, atleast you went talked and took photos) can this be changed? 2. Too much policies that no one even cares to implement because people don't own them, they are made in board rooms. Can this be changed? 3. Lack of accountability, transparency Openness and progress tracking on how the resource donated by external parties are used. (Resource are used on wrong things to window dress ie appear like we are doing something but in real sense nothing is happening on the ground after all its not our money its donor funded) can this be changed? How do we change all these so we can achieve the 2030 Agenda. 1. Put people where they belong (Talking group, get them their talking platforms and let them talk, it's good for the world, Action team, get them to digest what the talkers have said that makes sense and resource them to deliver ImPACT) 2. If all you do is talk and window dress, good luck, the focus should be on grassroots movement delivering real impact to the communities. 3. Empower people not to rely on handouts but to find solutions to their own problems by showing them the real thing, no shortcuts is going to save people's lives, we just have to be honest with ourselves and people around us. (You can only reap where you have sowed nothing less, nothing more) What do you think can be done differently to get the SDGs back on track and even achieving the targets by 2030? Chanced on this throwback to lively dialog (Putting my hands up in a rendition of Thriller - I know you know) on cause projects, beneficiary impact, and the funding framework for NGOs and impact startups. A privilege to have worked on a range of efforts, some falling under the United Nations SDGs, to benefit underserved parts of our communities along with supporting and springboarding the organizations that work tirelessly within them. Some: ✅Dementia & Alzheimer’s, aged care, the constellation of universal community & mental health challenges ✅Sustainability, environmental stewardship, climate change, oceans conservation ✅Poverty alleviation, food scarcity, other humanitarian work ✅Financial literacy & inclusion, bankability, critical upskilling for basic family & household wellness ✅Access to justice, courts systems, governance, closing the legal gap, addressing systemic imbalance ✅Diversity and inclusion - gender, ability, culture, class, LGBTQIA+, immigration & expatriation ✅Youth engagement, expression, developing technical & non-technical skills, career development If I recall, this was a talk on fundability and impact in nonprofit/charitable ecosystems that I did in Gent, Belgium, at one of the European Mensa Annual Gatherings. A great couple of hours digging deep into the intricacies from DEI, universal healthcare, femhealth, financial education, to disparities in senior living, the ways we become a more circular economy, renewables, straight through to challenges in startup executive leadership and creating meaningful development opportunities for management teams. Ignite 2024: Empowering Lives, Enriching Communities, and Nurturing the Planet!   Apexon Ignite, our philanthropy and happiness platform, made meaningful impact across Learning, Skill Development, and Sustainability in 2024. Apexon Associates, Ignite Team & Senior Leaders continued to make a difference to the larger world while living our core values!   Through 22 Ahaan Learning Centres, over 2100 children embraced the joy of learning through sports, creativity, and drama, unlocking new possibilities for their future.   Our Ahaan Vocational Centres equipped 475 youth and women with skills in BFSI, Digital Learning and English Literacy, paving the way for financial independence and economic empowerment.   Our Happy Periods initiative continued to promote menstrual wellness & period positivity to more than 3000 adolescent girls through 30+ workshops in schools.   Sabarmati Saheli, a program for women inmates at Sabarmati Jail, enabled distribution of sanitary pads to 2500 women, reaching to 10,000 women with distribution of 1.5 Million Pads since Inception.   Our Sustainability Charter strengthened Apexon’s ESG initiatives. From achieving ISO 14001:2015 certification and GHG third-party assurance to planting over 10,000 trees, we made significant strides in Apexon’s ESG journey.   Ignite also celebrated the inspiring Global Ignite Week, where 500 associates volunteered 2500 hours to serve their communities. Together, we covered 13 cities and 7 schools, distributing 500 food boxes, serving 7500 meals, and adopting 2800 plants, demonstrating the power of collective action.   Ignite 2024 was a celebration of our unwavering commitment to building a brighter future for communities and the planet.   Let’s relive the Journey of Ignite in 2024, Ignite Volunteers’ reflections on their journeys and expressions of their vision for Ignite in 2025.   Together, we’re creating lasting impact and limitless possibilities.   One Life At A Time! 🌟 Reflecting on an Inspiring #PhileaForum2024 in Gent 🌟 The Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association team truly outdid themselves with this year’s spectacular #PhileaForum2024 in the beautiful city of Gent. After three inspiring days, I left feeling energized and motivated by the great conversations with so many smart and engaged people! The flipside of gaining new knowledge is finding new questions. The Forum has certainly given me something to ponder on the train home and beyond. Here are a few personal reflections prompted by the inputs and conversations at the Forum: 1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 Foundations need to be (and can be) in it for the long term. It takes time to build trust and develop resilience. Yet, the climate crisis requires immediate action - we have no time to lose (#PhilanthropyForClimate). This urgency undermines philanthropy’s long-term horizon. How to balance these conflicting needs? (Brieuc Van Damme) 2. 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 How can we, as foundations and individuals, realize “moral ambition” (Rutger Bregman) without succumbing to moralistic arrogance? And anyway, what are the values that underpin our moral ambitions? Are these as universal and self-evident as we like to think? Plenty of food for thought here! 3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐚𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲  While there was no doubting the ambition and wish for positive transformation in the room, this took place against a backdrop of multiple crisis unfolding simultaneously (#Gaza, #democracy, #climate, #Europe, #Ukraine). So no, even our most creative efforts are currently clearly nowhere near proportionate to the challenges of our time (Andre Wilkens). We either need to change what we are doing or we need to scale up rapidly to make a difference. 4. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞?  The downside of being with like-minded people is.. that we think very much alike. I would welcome a bit more “discomfort” in some of the panels and conversations, a direct engagement with less popular opinions, and more interaction with those outside our bubble. Philanthropy should have the confidence to engage in uncomfortable conversations.  5. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.  The theme of this year’s conference, trust is the kit that holds democratic societies together. Without trust, we lack safe spaces to come together in constructive dialogue. Thank you Ezekiel Takam for bringing up the wonderful concept of ubuntu, which recognizes this interconnectedness within our community (“I am because we are”). Guess what I am placing my bets on for next year’s conference theme #PhileaForum2025 😉 A massive thanks to Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association (Delphine Moralis and team) and European Community Foundation Initiative for making it possible for me to be part of this vibrant and welcoming community.
