Programme Director supporting teams delivering community & climate change projects ➕coaching for Civic Leaders.
35 people have died. 705 people have been seriously injured. Another 6,550 people have suffered slight injuries. All of this in road collisions in just one London Borough, between 1st Jan 17 - 31st May 2023. We have to change this. We’re working to: - improve existing pedestrian crossings - create new pedestrian crossings - reduce motor vehicle speeds - create a network of safe cycling space - reduce traffic volume on small residential streets - deliver school streets Check out the slides below for some further data. Our vision is for zero people to be killed or seriously injured on our streets. #roadsafety #visionzero #changeleadership

Achieving #VisionZero goals means reducing the threat to those #walking or on #bikes and other #micromobility that is posed by motorists. The US City of Alexandria, Virginia, a close-in suburb of the US capital, managed to avoid traffic fatalities in 2023 by doing just that. Re-engineering the streets has proven to be a key component of this effort: “One example: the “road diet’—in which one lane was converted into a bike lane—on Seminary Road, which had been identified by the initiative as a high-crash area. While some residents pushed back against the move, a 2022 report from the city found that average annual crashes on the thoroughfare had since decreased by 41 percent.” It helps that much of city is laid out in a pre-automobile grid, as is the case in the colonial-era Old Town. However, the Seminary Road project represents an effort to make the western part of town, which was developed during the heyday of the motorist (the mid 20th century) less car-centric. It looks like that effort is paying dividends. (khp) https://lnkd.in/ex9R-iKh
