Business Retention and Expansion unit helps Cape Town enterprises to save millions The Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) unit has facilitated hundreds of business engagements, driving investment and economic activity across key industrial areas such as Atlantis, Blackheath, Epping, and Stikland. Efforts are now expanding to other economic zones including Airport Industria, Montague Gardens, Elsies River Industrial, and Paarden Eiland. 'A standout accomplishment includes the successful integration of Blackheath Industrial into the Eskom load curtailment programme, which fostered a strong relationship with Eskom and set the stage for similar outreach in other areas. Furthermore, the load curtailment programme supports businesses in reducing their energy consumption, leading to significant cost savings. This is shown in the financial impact data collected from three businesses in different areas who saw an average net saving of approximately R19,2 million, significantly boosting their financial stability and operational efficiency,' said James Vos Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth under which the BR&E unit falls. City ignites the future with new Energy apprentices in training The City’s state of the art Energy Training Centre is providing essential training and accredited certifications to artisans in the field of electricity work. The Energy Training Centre, based in Brackenfell, enables future Energy teams to attend to residents’ electricity requests and support the maintenance and upgrade programmes of the City’s rapidly expanding electricity infrastructure. ‘The training centre offers a comprehensive 27-month long curriculum comprising various aspects of electrical engineering, including basic electrical principles, electrical safety and regulations, wiring and installation techniques, switchgear maintenance and learner operator training, among others. These skills are critical considering the rapid expansion of our electricity network with a planned three-year R4 Billion infrastructure pipeline. ‘The City’s Energy Directorate is committed to the development of our workforce and we look forward to seeing our future artisans in the field to assist residents in the city,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg. The centre is an accredited Skills Development Provider (SDP) for the Electrician Trade by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). Cape Town a catamaran-building mecca In the past year, Cape Town boat builders have produced around 330 catamarans, the majority of which are exported. This is more than any other city in the world. This demand for Capetonian marine products is largely thanks to the City’s funding of special-purpose vehicle BlueCape, which promotes the local boat-building industry and supports skills development. In addition to the manufacture of catamarans, South Africa is also highly regarded for producing top-quality semi-rigid boats and rescue craft, says BlueCape, and several manufacturers operate in this sub-sector. Moreover, the demand for these diverse boat types has led to a rise in the number of component and equipment manufacturers producing items such as sails, masts, rigging components, marine-grade rope, aluminium doors, upholstery, carbon-fibre hatches, engine components, and stainless-steel accessories. Cape Town’s marine manufacturing industry is valued at over R3 billion per annum and is growing at an impressive rate of over 17% annually. As demand grows, so too does the need for an ever-expanding skilled workforce. This is why the City proudly supports BlueCape to drive work-readiness initiatives and promote the Mother City’s boat-building industry among investors. #TourismMonth #ChooseCapeTown #TourismIndustry
