Happy Park(ing) Day 2024! The transformation of our car dominated cities into livable, walkable, urban areas continues with the DIY urbanism of Park(ing) Day Participants. Transforming more of our paved areas into Parklets provides new opportunities for a variety of human activities and increased safety for pedestrians and cyclist. Repurposed Parking spaces have been used for some of the following activities; a wedding, urban farming displays, lawn bowling, marshland, and many more. This movement goes hand in hand with the city of San Franciscos new law which will prohibit parking within 20' of an approaching crosswalk. This open space will create greater visibility for drivers, thus protecting pedestrians and cyclist. To reduce the maintenance need of painting curb corners, this space can be retrofitted into new Parklets in the city. I commend Mithūn Architecture for creating a Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly habitat learning center at 585 Howard Street in San Francisco. Other endemic species to San Francisco such as the San Francisco Lessingea or Franciscan Wallflower may one day find new habitat in a Parking spaces, revitalizing the natural ecology of the city.
