Brent Toderian's Open Forum piece published in the Sunday SF Chronicle provides some good insights into steps that could be taken to revitalize downtown Sacramento and which could be applicable to SF also. The theory is that by adding housing in or in close proximity to downtowns that you create the 24/7 environment desired to fill the office buildings and make restaurants, bars, grocery stores, and other retail businesses viable. The article lists 6 key steps, one of which is to modify the Builder's indemnity covering construction defects in condo projects from the current prohiibtive 10 years, to something more reasonable like 5 years (Brent suggests 2 years) as many people prefer to own rather than rent. The steps Brent outlines are keys to get people living in the downtown areas and will help restore the vitality necessary to bring back tourists and commuters. #revitalizingdowntowns #24/7downtowns

How is City Allies drawing inspiration from the City's vibrant history of the 1880s? The other day, I visited Postman’s Park. Of course, I found out about this amazing place near St. Paul's Cathedral from Keith, our first City storyteller. Keith's incredible knowledge and passion for the City are super inspiring. So what's so special about this park in the heart of the City? The highlight is the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. I had never seen a similar memorial, and I was truly touched to read dozens of stories about City men, women, and children who lost their lives trying to save others—strangers, friends, family, or patients. There are 54 stories that testify to the City's extraordinary spirit of community. These stories showcase the bravery and compassion that have long been part of the City’s heritage. This is a reminder of the City of London’s long history of supporting each other, thriving on belonging and a sense of community. I am grateful to Keith for encouraging me to explore this memorial. I feel incredibly honoured to make a small contribution to the City's chronicles by uncovering today's extraordinary City people through City Allies, this ethnographic project I am deeply enthusiastic about. Smart policy alert! Modernizing the #nyc zoning code to allow businesses to grow and neighborhoods to have diverse #retail is vital to the city's economic future. This video from Mayor Adams, Dan Garodnick, and the NYC Department of City Planning does a good job of justifying why their plan to update the code (called the City of Yes for Economic Opportunity #rezoning) makes perfect sense. Seriously, preventing dancing from places that play music does not make much sense (even if folks have to watch terrible dancers like me!). Downtown is BACK! “A new study of more than 60 downtowns across the U.S. and Canada places downtown Minneapolis at the top of the pack when it comes to an increase in visitors over the past year…A previous Downtown Recovery study in mid-2023 by the University of Toronto’s School of Cities determined that downtown Minneapolis was third to last in foot traffic recovery compared to the same period in 2019.” This type of progress doesn’t happen by accident, but is the result of hard work by small businesses, city leaders, local organizations, and community organizers. But most importantly this type of progress is the result on Minnesotans showing up and investing their time, money, and energy in the small businesses and local events at the forefront of downtown’s resurgence.
