The process of failure due to material fatigue or errors in the operation can lead to contamination of water sources, in SIMA we have implemented a warning system for oil spill on the high seas, with laser diagnostic instruments that monitor and detect changes in water, drift buoys for oil slick tracking, analysis and visualization software that allows selecting the appropriate area to deploy containment barriers, high resolution hydrodynamic model to determine the displacement of hydrocarbon by wave drag and thus minimize the impact on the environment. #oilgas #offshore #drilling #engineering

Surveying requires management and decision making in deciding the appropriate methods and instrumentation required to complete the task satisfactorily to the specified accuracy and within the time limits available. This initial process can only be properly executed after very careful and detailed reconnaissance of the area to be surveyed.

Over the last few weeks, we have highlighted ways to improve the quality of geotechnical monitoring including: 1. Choosing the right instrument 2. Putting it in the right place 3. Installing it correctly 4. Reading and maintaining it properly, and 5. Installing it at the right time However, the value of monitoring is realised well after the right instrument has been chosen, put in the right place, installed properly at the right time and read correctly. Doing all of the aforementioned tasks well will undoubtedly take time and cost more, but not doing them well or missing any part of the process will likely mean that when the measurements are most needed they are not of a high enough quality to be of any value. Specifying instruments in a way that allows the contractor to choose the instrument to be used on the basis of the cheapest available is unlikely to result in high quality measurements. Installing instruments badly, reading them incorrectly and not allowing sufficient time to collect baseline readings, might save money but will also result in poor quality measurements. The late John Dunnicliff had a golden rule that “the goal should be to assign each task to the people with the greatest motivation to achieve high quality data.” The greatest motivation is usually found in someone that has knowledge of how the instrumentation works (i.e., a monitoring specialist) and this is most effective when the same person also has knowledge of how the ground or structure is expected to behave. At Geotechnical Observations, we pride ourselves on being knowledgeable about instrumentation, geotechnics and structures. The establishment of a DOT mandated damage prevention program enables the prevention of 100% of all accidents involving excavation equipment and pipeline damage. Statistics have proven that vigilant participation and the enforcement of a qualified damage prevention program saves lives and diminishes asset losses. To ensure that your company remains within DOT compliance and to protect the lives of those working and living near your pipelines, the following programs must be instituted. 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒂 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 Urban sprawl has forced the development of land that possibly contains multiple cross-country oil and gas transmission lines. Before developing a tract of land or preparing for the construction of a process unit, it is imperative to electronically “sweep” areas that may contain undocumented or abandoned piping or obstacles. Our OQ Certified technicians utilize our standard line location equipment or incorporate the use of our cesium magnetometer for the most thorough survey. 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 Alpha’s OQ certified technicians are electronic line locating specialists for locating underground pipelines, cables, and conduits under concrete, in crowded right-of-ways and multiple pipeline corridors, under power lines, and in virtually any terrain. Our standard line locating service includes establishing the approximate depths of pipelines and underground obstacles. Our technicians will also paint marks on the ground above the line, probe, and mark the location with a lathe identifying the customer’s name, type of line, line size, and depth. Should our customers choose, our technicians can also: - GPS the location of your system and points such as PIs, valves, and obstacles - Provide a map of your system for your records or integration into your one-call system. - Relocate markers that are not representative of the pipeline location. #pipelineintegrity #dotregulations #linelocating #areasweep #electronicsweep #oqcertified

💧 AC Mitigation Strategies for Water Pipelines Interference with High Voltage Overhead Lines ⚡ 🚧 Proposed Alternative Solutions for Pipeline Grounding 🚧 ⚡ AC Mitigation Study To ensure pipeline safety and integrity under steady-state and fault-state conditions, AC mitigation studies address key risks like Steady-state induced voltage, AC corrosion, Fault-state touch & coating stress voltage, and Direct soil arcing. 🔍 Mitigation Methods Based on NACE International Standard SP0177-2014, mitigation systems divert AC interference using low-resistance grounding. 1️⃣ Surface Grounding Cost-effective solution using bare copper cables, zinc ribbons, etc. Buried parallel to the pipeline and connected via DC decouplers. 2️⃣ Deep Grounding Vertical anodes drilled into the ground for low resistance. Ideal in high-resistivity soils or where horizontal grounding isn’t feasible. *** Check the attached table for a summary of both methods. ⚠️ Pipeline Construction Problems During construction, critical AC mitigation measures (e.g., horizontal galvanized steel grounding wires, high-resistivity crushed stone layers) can be implemented. Without these, post-construction excavation near pipelines becomes infeasible. 🛠️ Proposed Alternative Solution The methodology combines surface grounding with deep-drilled ground wells to: ✔️ Maximize AC interference mitigation 🌐 Efficiently reduce AC interference and enhance pipeline safety and reliability. 🛡️ Minimize disruptions 🚧 Ensure smooth implementation without impacting existing infrastructure or operations. 🔧 Solve challenges of deep excavation near pipelines for horizontal grounding ⛏️ Provide practical solutions for hard-to-reach areas without requiring extensive digging. This approach is a practical solution, cost effective alternative to traditional AC mitigation measures, ensuring safety and reliability in pipeline infrastructure. #PipelineSafety #ACMitigation #GroundingSystems #FiniteElementAnalysis #Infrastructure #Engineering #Energy
