Love this profile! And while I know so much about their work, it never fails to expand my grasp of the ways communities are, and should be more supported, as authorities of the conditions in which they live: “For University Park Slow Jams with USC, we made giant band-aids for community members to place on broken sidewalk “ouchies.”” Who gets to define when infrastructure is working or not working? How do formal, technical definitions fail in the face of lived experiences as they so often do? This example makes me wonder why communities don’t get to issue “traffic tickets” to public agencies who fail to maintain equitable access to services and safe outcomes. There’s actually a legal pathway for this. Getting hip to Public Matters approach to #conspiratorialjoy should be pre-work for anyone involved in U.S. Department of Transportation #reconnectingcommunities program!

Being a good citizen means more than just voting. It means serving. We will lose our democracy if more citizens don’t step up and volunteer. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Arts Council, the Parks department, planning, zoning, city council, school board… just serve. It’s your duty as a good citizen.

The AAME worked to place this story about City of Encinitas City Manager Pamela Antil in a local paper. When it comes to advocacy on behalf of city managers and other public sector executives, the AAME will utilize earned media strategies to advocate on behalf of its members, like James Freed We will ensure that narratives reflecting the manager's perspective are communicated to the public and local elected officials. And believe me, the ICMA - International City/County Management Association hasn't cornered the market when it comes to earned media and public information campaigns. There has been much talk lately about how some prospective members of the AAME are concerned about some form of retaliation coming from the ICMA if they join the organization. I believe these fears are overblown. Such tactics would be incredibly damaging to the organization, if attempted, because the AAME would deploy a multi-faceted campaign in response. Here is a quote by AAME founder Joseph Turner from this article (https://lnkd.in/dxsmAM79) about Antil: Turner, a former city administrator and president of the newly formed American Association of Municipal Executives, of which Freed is now a member, said that it’s “hypocritical for Antil and the ICMA to hold themselves out to the world as the arbiters of what is ethical conduct for city managers when they will not even comply with court orders.” “If Antil is willing to defy a judge and obstruct the justice system, how can she be trusted to do the right thing at City Hall,” Turner said. ----- The deadline to sign up and become a founding member of the AAME has been extended to July 25th.
