🗽Today, we celebrate Juneteenth and a groundbreaking step towards racial justice in NY: Governor Hochul and state legislators have established a Reparations Commission to address the legacy of slavery and ongoing inequity. 🤝🏾 New Yorkers for Reparations (NY4R), a grassroots coalition building the movement for reparations in New York, is gathering signatures and rallying New Yorkers to ensure the commission's success. ➤ But the work has just begun. The Commission needs widespread support to counter MAGA Republican opposition, who seek to whitewash history and block progress. As the NY4R statement says: "Gov. Hochul and state legislators created this commission in response to the demands of New Yorkers across race and place who know reparations are urgent and necessary for making equality real for Black New Yorkers. And we know that the commissioners selected for the task embody the necessary expertise, experience, and values for giving us a roadmap to righting the wrongs of injustice in our state from its foundation.” Join us in taking action this Juneteenth – 📄 Read the full NY4R press release here: https://lnkd.in/dzTr9xMw ✍🏽 Sign NY4R's statement for New Yorkers supporting reparations in the press release 📢 Share this post to spread the word about New York’s historic opportunity for reparations. #Juneteenth #Reparations #RacialJustice #NewYork #NY4R #ReparationsNow #SupportReparations

BSR offices in the U.S. will be closed today in observance of Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America, as Union soldiers marched on Galveston, Texas in 1865. 159 years later, we acknowledge the continued impact of racialized systemic oppression on Black communities throughout the United States and beyond. Whether your company chooses to recognize or observe this holiday, there is an opportunity to approach its commemoration in a way that advances DEI and social justice efforts within your organization. For BSR members, several resources developed by our Equity, Inclusion & Justice (EIJ) team are available in the member portal to help you get started, such as: Allies+: Ally, Advocate, and Accomplice: https://lnkd.in/gZnn_95H; and Inclusive Leadership: https://lnkd.in/gXmT9wrm. For all viewers, we're also pleased to share The Social Justice Guide for Business: Moving Beyond Crisis to Action, developed by BSR's Center for Business and Social Justice: https://lnkd.in/d-ZyUKtZ. We welcome you to engage with these resources and/or reach out to our team, ready to partner with you to further your DEI ambitions and programming. Email us at web@bsr.org. We stand resolute that to achieve sustainability, we must promote equity and justice. #happyjuneteenth, #DEI, #sustainablebusiness

New Entry on the #OhioMBE Wall of Shame: Columbus City Council We stand for #FairnessInBusiness & it's with concern we address the Council's recent 5-2 vote allowing non-citizens to bid on city projects & apply for certifications. This move potentially sidelines our local, minority-owned businesses, who are already facing an uphill battle. Moreover, the dismissive attitude of certain members, notably an "honorary" white woman council member Lourdes Barroso de Padilla, towards our Black community leaders is unacceptable. Respectful dialogue is key, and anything less is a disservice to our community. We urge the Columbus City Council to reevaluate their policies & conduct. Our community deserves better. #Accountability #Respect #MinorityBusiness Read more & stay informed https://lnkd.in/ejihJgYW https://lnkd.in/e-ig4Bsy

HISTORY & RESEARCH 96% of privately owned rural land in the United States is owned by people of European descent. Black folks own less than 1% of rural land in the United States. How and why has this happened? One could analyze socio-economic and political factors that have been at play in the Black community using the following: Black folks want to live among each other. Humans are naturally tribal and don’t want to integrate. Owning land requires a particular understanding and/or education that has been historically difficult for Black folks to attain. Black folks moved to cities following industry and jobs and it wouldn’t make sense for them to buy rural land. Credit scores, financial literacy deficiencies, etc. I pose a question: during the “Great Migration”, why would so many Black folks, skilled and trained in agriculture, move to industrial cities up North? I posit that the most influential mechanism has been the restrictive racial covenant. Although they have not been enforceable since the Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968, the treatment of Black folks as chattel property until emancipation, the anti-Black property ownership practices that took place post-civil war/reconstruction, and the subsequent 50 years of restrictive covenants enforced by the federal government have carved out a path that self perpetuates. Today, we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, received news of their liberation in 1865, two and a half years after the declaration of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today is not just a commemoration of the past but a call to action for the present and future, and a time to reflect on the progress we've made and acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. I encourage you to take a moment to educate yourself about its significance, support Black-owned businesses, participate in local events, and engage in conversations about racial justice. Let us listen, learn, and take meaningful actions to create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. I found the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, linked below, to be informative, and if you have any other resources or creators you'd like to share, please add them to the comments below. Together, we can honor this day by building a future rooted in understanding, unity, and equality. Read more at https://lnkd.in/eNMwQqtJ

Simply; the Cowardness of Action(s). Even then the Constitution was then and still today not up holden to the Races of the +\-15%ers'. Equality will come when those without representation, we have token representation today, collectively built for themselves the #Infrastructure(s) to secure their own Constitutionality's and support that; which heretofore has yet to be established yet again and then sustained for generations. What became known as Bloody Sunday occurred #OnThisDay in 1965 in Selma, Alabama. The march was named for the 600 marchers who were attacked while crossing Edmund Pettus bridge. Law enforcement officers attacked unarmed marchers with Billy clubs and sprayed tear gas. Activist Amelia Boynton Robinson was brutally beaten by Alabama state troopers during the march. This photo drew national attention to the cause of civil rights and captured the brutality of the African American voting rights struggle. Robinson was a leading organizer of the march, working directly with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Robinson had a history of activism, co-founding the Dallas County Voters League in 1933, and held African American voter registration drives in Selma from the 1930s-1950s. Later that year, the Voting Rights Act passed, a landmark federal achievement of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
