On a snow theme: LinkedIn hive mind, where can I apply for grants to investigate snow/fire #mountainsystems in Australia? ...and which universities / CRCs / organizations want to host and collaborate if successful? ...alternatively, I'm open to working as an industry partner / collaborator. What's possible? ...or a purely commercial arrangement, contracting (or hired in house) to progress understanding. I've got some hunches, it would be interesting to do the work. ** NEW PROGRAM for Teens - Ecologist In Training ** Teens ages 13 - 17, join us from May to the end of August to build your knowledge of our local plants, animals, insects, ecosystems and processes. This 4 month program will include 8 weekend in-person workshops, 8 independent in-field assignments and directed readings. Develop your knowledge of the world around you and develop practical field skills to support your interest in becoming a naturalist, biologist or ecologist. This program will take place on 8 Saturdays with additional time available to drop in. We require a minimum of 6 participants for this program to proceed. Cost is $300/teen. Dates for the in-person workshops are: May 4 & 18, June 1 & 22, July 6 & 27, Aug 10 & 17. Times will vary depending on the workshop topic but will most likely be one early morning in May and afternoons for the rest. To register or if you have questions, email education@rvcc.ca. Deadline to register is April 1, 2024.

The Fall 2024 undergraduate semester-away program is now live! Current undergrads and recent college graduates from any accredited US institution, in any major, can apply now for either (1) Conservation, Biodiversity and Society, or (2) Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. Each hands-on program contains 16 upper-level undergraduate credit hours, and can satisfy degree requirements in a variety of ways.   George Mason University students, earn a minor in one semester, or use credits to satisfy concentration or even Mason Core requirements! Attending from another school? This degree program merges biological, physical and information sciences with the study of environmental systems, issues and solutions to major environmental problems. *Not a story about Severn Trent* One of the hardest things we learn to do professionally is to advocate for ourselves in the workplace. This is something I think we need to support those early in their careers with as they are at the greatest risk of being exploited due to inexperience. I do a small amount of bat surveys for consultancies in the summer. This week I went to a site which was not being managed safely. I raised my concerns and possible solutions with the site leader who’s response was they agreed it was an issue but they didn’t want to piss off the client. When I raised it higher up in the company a broad overview of their response was “who are you to question our site lead?”. Their closing statement was that I need to “learn to work more constructively with site leads in the future”. Suffice to say that I don’t work with them any longer. I’m just glad that this situation occurred at this point of my career where I had the understanding and confidence to stand up to bad practice. As we get further into the ecological survey season I do worry about those early career ecologists who will inevitably be given unreasonable and sometimes dangerous conditions to work it. It’s something I was once again glad to see Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) discuss at their conference and I hope work continues to protect young ecologists. The continuous drying up of freshwater ecosystems in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world in recent time is a great concern to freshwater ecologist This process is accompanied by loss of valuable species of fauna and flora which play significant role in ecosystem engineering. unfortunately, human activities in the environments always resulted in a negative impacts in the environment. However, as an early career scientist with keen interest in environmental biology, we embark on a research to evaluate the abundant and distributions of zooplankton in anthropogenic-impacted freshwater ecosystem to provide the first and early warning signal on the impacts of human activities on this ecosystem. #Jacob Uduak #Freshwater Ecologist #Environmental Biologist #Environmental Toxicologist

Attending IMCC: International Marine Conservation Congress? I'll be presenting on the last day! Many early career marine scientists report that they *want* to perform conservation relevant research, but that they do not know how to effectively do this. This is often because of a lack of understanding of how science is used by conservation advocates and policymakers, or even a lack of understanding of the conservation and natural resources management policymaking process in general. As a result, many well-intentioned scientists spend years performing work that is functionally useless to conservation. Here we present practical, actionable advice from survey responses from natural resources managers, conservation advocates, and scientists with extensive experience performing policy-relevant research. We also present a novel, simple checklist for determining whether or not a given research project is indeed important for conservation and management.
