Promised since long, my next essay on policing is out! Reflections on the path from the outside to the inside of a system. They focus on the important role of education. This within a context of policing based on values, and it’s purpose. Ethical policing meaning that values reflect, in the case of policing which I argue, the protection of human and citizen’s rights, the rule of law, and democratic values. The essay also includes my first personal experiences navigating through danger zones, with invisible threats from mental corruption, with the red hot zone of danger, and the institutional and managerial safeguards necessary for any individual to navigate into and through a system with minimum damage to oneself, others, and the system. The essay reflects on the inevitability of making mistakes, learning from them. It also provides examples for what can happen when young police officers are being confronted with situations beyond their control. A police organization investing into a long-term commitment, ensuring values and staff adhering to them is providing profound advantages.  Towards the end of the essay I reflect briefly on what this meant in my international policing work, both from a perspective of qualifying international police in peace operations, and for any assistance to efforts supporting capacity building of domestic police. This is one of several conduits into a forthcoming essay in which I will use my international experiences for a deeper dive, using country situation examples and explaining the intention of the Strategic Guidance Framework of international policing in peace operations. https://lnkd.in/ey8HmMMU

Recently, an altercation took place involving a Massachusetts detective at a Disney theme park underscores a critical lesson for us in the private security and law enforcement sectors: the indelible impact of off-duty behavior on professional credibility and public trust. As someone deeply embedded in the private security industry, this incident hits close to home. It’s a stark reminder that the line between personal and professional conduct is not just blurred for those of us in security and law enforcement; it’s virtually non-existent in the public’s eye. Our actions, whether in uniform or out, reflect directly on our profession and the organizations we represent. The detective in question, with a commendable career and service record, now faces charges that could not only end his law enforcement career but also tarnish his previous contributions. This situation speaks volumes about the pressures and stresses inherent in our line of work. It also raises important questions about how we, as industry leaders, can better support our personnel, ensuring they have the tools and resources to manage these pressures effectively. In the private security sector, we often operate in the background, yet the expectations for our conduct are just as high as those in public law enforcement. This incident serves as a critical learning opportunity for all of us. It reinforces the need for continuous professional development, ethical leadership, and mental health support within our ranks. Let this be a call to action for all of us leading in security and law enforcement: to not only set high standards for professional behavior but to also foster an environment where our teams feel supported both on and off duty. I was recently asked, "What is the biggest challenge(s) law enforcement will face in the next 5-10 years?" Here's my brief response. Curious what you would add... "In the next 5-10 years, law enforcement faces the significant challenge of balancing the public's growing demands with limited resources. The expectation for police departments to deliver more services at a faster pace, while simultaneously navigating the complexities of modern technology and innovation, presents substantial financial and operational pressures. Public agency partnerships and public-private partnerships are critical to addressing these issues, as collaboration can enhance resource allocation and bring innovative solutions to the forefront. The gap between public expectations and the realities of what can be feasibly achieved with available resources is a critical concern. Also, as we work to rebuild and maintain public trust within our communities, the recruitment and retention of highly qualified and passionate individuals for long-term careers in law enforcement remain persistent challenges. This issue seems widespread across many police agencies and requires strategic approaches to attract and sustain a dedicated workforce committed to serving our communities effectively.
