Our brains are hardwired to look for threats, to make a plan to address those threats and keep us safe. Those perceived threats may be based on past experiences, or may be the "what ifs" we imagine could happen in the future. Our "what ifs" are usually negative outcomes. These are what we call "hot thoughts" – they bring up a lot of emotion (particularly sadness, worry or anger), which means we can easily get stuck on those thoughts and keep going over them. We start overthinking. But…. Who overthinks and how can you stop overthinking? 🤔 https://flip.it/hFlKaq

Safety starts with understanding. Are you curious about your team member's POV? Do you understand what they need to feel comfortable at work (and therefore, more productive)? I love working at MindWire where we use this tool to quickly understand differences and provide what's needed for others to be their best self. For me, I'm extraverted, but that casual speaking style can sometimes be interpreted as informal -- when actually, I have formal approach to getting things done and like to know the details of a project or task. My manager knows this and has created a supportive relationship where I feel comfortable speaking up and asking for more clarity so that I can complete a project to perfection quickly!

Threatening to break up can lead to distance in a relationship because it undermines the sense of security and trust essential for intimacy. From a psychological perspective, such threats introduce fear and uncertainty, causing partners to become defensive and emotionally withdrawn. This behavior activates stress responses, prompting individuals to protect themselves by distancing emotionally or physically. Consistent threats can erode the foundation of mutual respect and communication, fostering a cycle of negative interactions and diminishing the sense of partnership. Ultimately, the repeated instability may make reconciliation and genuine connection increasingly difficult, leading to greater emotional and relational distance. https://lnkd.in/gbWa8P46
