Yesterday, I attended my Graduation Ceremony at ACU. My parents, grandparents, sister, and fiance drove over four hours to watch the graduation.
This event was not just to celebrate the hard work I have put in over the last five years. It was equally about saying thank you to those who supported me through this long journey. Well, at least that was what it should have been about.
Instead, Joe de Bruyn hijacked the event, giving a speech that led to a mass exodus of nearly the entire crowd. What he said is not worth repeating here, and plenty of articles detail its contents.
What he said had nothing to do with graduation, celebration, or a thank you to anyone. His words simply ruined the day for many.
Everyone has the right to express their beliefs. However, there is a time and place for everything. Clearly, the graduation ceremony was not the time or place to express your anti-lbgtqi+, anti-abortion and anti-IVF rhetoric. I know I did not pay over $200 to listen to that.
I rarely post on social media, especially about stuff like this, because it often does not create change. However, ACU students have created a petition to have Joe de Bruyn stripped of his honorary doctorate.
So, if you believe that somebody who claims that abortion is worse than WWII should have their honorary doctorate stripped from them, please sign the petition attached below.
