🤖 Digitalisation is changing rail for the better 🤖 Over half of all journeys on London’s Northern City Line now operate using digital signalling, improving customer journeys with more consistent and reliable journeys. Adopting digital technologies to monitor key #rail assets, like #switches and #crossings, can help to transform customer journeys and operators’ maintenance processes. Thanks to our remote condition monitoring solution, SWIX, combined with our data-driven digital platform, asset owners get real-time asset health data, 24/7, 365 days a year. #Digitalisation can transform your maintenance and asset monitoring to make it safer, reduce your costs, and allow you to perform preventative, not just reactive, maintenance. To start digitising your #assetmonitoring, get in touch via your favourite digital medium. https://bit.ly/4c8rvzD

We're honored to see two of TRC's partners named to Metro Magazine's Innovative Solutions Awards for 2024: FAST (Fairfield, California) and CTS (Chillicothe, Ohio). This week, Metro's feature article described the immediate and tangible impact that deploying integrated, demand-responsive transit service has had on FAST and CTS' communities. FAST saw a 100% increase in trips in the first month of commingled service, with nearly 30,000 people moved to date. CTS immediately saw shorter wait times, and a 22% increase in fleet utilization. It's clear that on-demand transit is lending an undeniable and positive impact on rider experience and quality of life. Read more at https://lnkd.in/eRjWRJkp This is the second time our partners have been recognized with this prestigious industry award. In 2022, the awards recognized TRC's innovative "Ride Pingo to Transit" pilot with King County Metro.

'Microtransit options can work well in less-dense areas and suburbs where few other transit options are available and where ridership is sparse. However, the per-mile cost of these services can be prohibitive to some agencies and, some have argued, does not scale well.' It definitely works well for connecting smaller communities where a fixed-route service would just run empty most of the time (low efficiency). DRTs or microtransit help develop a localized, adaptive transportation system that works for areas not cost-effectively served by normal fixed-route services. #sharedmobility #ondemand #drt #microtransit #publictransit #operationalcosts #profitablegrowth #viability https://lnkd.in/gev6w28e

Rail passengers in the West Midlands and Manchester will soon be able to pay by 'tapping in and out'. These welcome schemes will encourage more people on to public transport, and are a positive step towards the simple, fully-integrated ticketing that all passengers deserve. Transport inequality needs tackling as a matter of priority, to give all cities good public transport. These pilot schemes will help, and we would like to see similar schemes in all urban regions to boost confidence and grow passenger numbers. https://lnkd.in/eaZeeJ_k

Network Rail and Transport for Wales join forces to cut journey times between Cardiff and Manchester Passengers travelling between Cardiff, Manchester and Holyhead can now benefit from faster journeys after Network Rail and Transport for Wales (TfW) worked together to remove dozens of historic speed restrictions for trains on the route. The Class 67 locomotives which haul Mark 4 carriages on TfW’s Premier Service trains had previously seen their speed limited in 40 locations on the Marches Line. Network Rail has intervened and made changes to remove 38 of those restrictions, paving the way for quicker journey times. Passengers are already seeing shorter journeys by around 10 minutes between Cardiff and Manchester – thanks to signalling tweaks and new signage. Network Rail Wales and Borders programme manager Alex Hinshelwood said: “After three years of hard work and collaboration, the line-speed improvement project on the Marches Line has been commissioned. “This allows all trains between Hereford, Crewe and North Wales to run at the same speed, bringing significant journey time improvements in time for the December 2024 timetable change. “The top speed on the line hasn’t altered – but now all trains, some of which were previously restricted to a lower speed, are allowed to run at the same top speed. “When we saw the potential journey-time savings that could be made, we were thrilled to be able to help TfW deliver faster journeys for their passengers by realising the full capability of the railway. “We are now looking at other locations across the Wales and Borders route where we can make similar line-speed improvements.” Transport for Wales planning and performance director Colin Lea said: “Working closely with our partners in Network Rail, we are delighted to have agreed these key line-speed improvements on the Marches line. “These will initially prove to be a performance boost for us, meaning we can get more customers to where they are travelling to on time. From December, we will also be able to improve journey times on the back of this work, meaning shorter journeys for our customers. “The Marches route is incredibly important, linking North Wales and the North West of England, to South Wales and services to the Cambrian coast and Birmingham. “Speed improvements can only be achieved through close collaboration and with safety at the forefront, so this achievement really does show how train operators and Network Rail can work together for the benefit of customers and the economy.” https://lnkd.in/evz4UTsb

London Northwestern Railway proposes new #Manchester to #London train services London Northwestern Railway has unveiled proposals to run new train services between Manchester, the West Midlands and London #Euston. It said that the plans are designed to improve connectivity between the Midlands and the North West, as well as providing more choice for passengers. Under the proposals, London Northwestern Railway’s existing services between London Euston and Crewe would be extended through to Manchester Victoria and the current services between Stafford and Crewe would be extended to #ManchesterAirport. The services linking Manchester city centre to London would use the operator’s brand-new Class 730 electric trains, which are manufactured in the Midlands by Alstom and will provide a significant increase in capacity, with each 10-car train able to carry more than 1,200 passengers. The proposal will see London Northwestern Railway working with local operators and Network Rail to determine the best overall solution, tying in with planned upgrades to Manchester Victoria station, the TransPennine route upgrade and other local improvements in the North West. Ian McConnell, managing director of West Midlands Trains, operator of London Northwestern Railway, said: “This proposal puts passengers at the heart of the railway and is the common sense solution to increase connectivity between the North West and the West Midlands following the cancellation of the northern leg of HS2.” Dominic Booth, chief executive officer of WMT’s parent company, Transport UK Group, said: “Our new service proposals represent a significant step forward in enhancing the rail network between Manchester and London. “By leveraging the new Class 730 electric trains, we will provide greater capacity and comfort for customers travelling to Manchester while also supporting the local economy by creating new job opportunities in the North West. This proposal aligns with our commitment to delivering efficient, sustainable, and customer-focused rail services across the UK.” In addition to the economic benefits of generating additional revenue and enhancing connectivity between two of the UK’s largest city regions, the operator said the new services would also create new train crew and management jobs in the North West. London Northwestern Railway will formally submit its plans to the Office for Rail and Road (ORR) later this year. If approved, the new services could commence from May 2026 once additional train crew have been recruited and trained. https://lnkd.in/emkZi8cu
