The great wealth transfer taking place in the next 25 years can be a structural tailwind to continued and consistent demand for sustainable investment products. The results of PitchBook's annual Sustainable Investment Survey are in—does perception of ESG and impact investing match reality? In this case, perception may be different from reality. While the ESG and impact investing spaces are fraught with controversy, our fifth annual Sustainable Investment Survey report shows that practitioners are leaning into their investment approaches in new and innovative ways. With over 1,000 global respondents, including asset owners, VC and PE GPs, and family offices, the survey reveals a number of trends—including a desire to move away from the term "ESG" and a shift toward ESG implementation among both VC and non-VC fund managers.

ESG Investing Trends At the beginning of the year we included ESG as a key trend to watch in 2024. Specifically, we said "Companies must continue to evolve role as corporate citizen in environment, social and governance related activities." We still stand by this. Pitchbook just published new survey results on ESG investing. Respondents were from the broad venture capital industry and from across the world. The good news is that 64% of respondents reported incoporating ESG into their investing process. The bad news is that of the 36% of respondents who don't incorporate ESG into their investing process, approximately 65% said that "ESG is mostly baseless virtue signaling." And another 36% of those who don't practice ESG investing said "ESG constitutes a breach of fiduciary duty." We encourage all to review the report and discuss the findings.
