The CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities testified before the Hosing Committee on HB 5242 - Housing security is essential for any type of success in other parts of one’s life. Too often those who are formerly incarcerated continue to struggle to find housing due to their conviction. In a system that is supposed to be rehabilitative, instead it is punitive. The barriers to successful reentry continue long after release in the form of denial of housing because of a conviction. The statutory change in HB 5242 is intended to increase access to those formerly incarcerated while also offering protections to housing providers. https://lnkd.in/eia2XAf6

I’ve been doing a deep dive examining policing reforms over the last ten years, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the read. In my latest analysis for Policing Insight, I explore how different places around the globe have approached reform. It’s fascinating to see the variety of strategies, from tech upgrades like body cams to shifts towards community policing. Yet, despite these changes, finding that sweet spot where the community truly feels the difference remains a challenge. This isn’t just about policing—it’s a much bigger conversation on leadership and how we can all drive real change in our organizations and communities. It’s about asking ourselves, how can we do better? How can we move from just tweaking the system to making meaningful, impactful changes? I’m really interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Have you seen examples of effective reform in your community? What do you think it takes to move from plans to actual, felt progress? Always to go where you’re celebrated and not just tolerated. (Let that sink in) It speaks to the essence of genuine acceptance, recognition, and appreciation. When you're celebrated, you're not just passively accepted or begrudgingly acknowledged; you're embraced wholeheartedly for who you are and what you bring to the table. Life is too short for half-hearted nods and lukewarm receptions – we deserve nothing less than dignified respect for the magic we bring to the table. In these spaces, we thrive, we shine, and we illuminate the path for others to follow. So, welcome to the NSBWEP spotlight, NEVER settle for the shadows. Human Capital & Workforce Performance Strategist | TEDx Speaker | Expert in Talent Development, Team Facilitation, and Culture Transformation
Civility in Our Community: A Key Takeaway Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a luncheon and discussion at the Warrenton Rotary Club on the topic of Civility in Our Community. The conversation was facilitated by the John Hopkins Initiative and featured valuable insights from our Sheriff, the School Superintendent, and a representative from the Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center. One key takeaway I want to share is the importance of the Platinum Rule: “Treat others the way they want to be treated.” This concept resonated deeply within this topic as it moves beyond the familiar Golden Rule and challenges us to truly understand and respect the diverse needs and perspectives of others. At a time when civility seems to be increasingly rare, adopting the Platinum Rule can foster stronger relationships, healthier communities, and more effective collaboration. It encourages empathy, active listening, and a commitment to making others feel valued and respected. Let's strive to apply this principle in our daily interactions, creating a more harmonious and inclusive environment for all. #CivilityMatters #PlatinumRule #Community

This morning I was preparing a note to my current cohort of U.S. Coast Guard leaders that completed week 3 of the RBLP Leader Certifications Building and Leading Resilient Teams program which discuss “providing purpose.” My thoughts led me to a recent event in my home state of South Carolina. Here’s my message to the cohort: Earlier this week, we engaged in an important discussion about "providing purpose" in the workplace. We explored how a clear sense of purpose can motivate individuals, foster collaboration, and ultimately drive success within an organization. Purpose gives our daily tasks significance; it creates a deeper connection to our work and helps us understand our larger role within a community. To illustrate the complexity of purpose, let's briefly shift our focus to a topic that some may find challenging but is nonetheless important: the recent execution of an inmate convicted of murder in South Carolina. This event, which took place after years of legal battles and debate, demonstrates the various perspectives on justice, redemption, and accountability. In the context of providing purpose, we can ask ourselves: what purpose does this act serve? For some, it might symbolize closure for the victims' families, a way to find peace in the face of tragedy. For others, it may provoke thoughts about the nature of punishment and the potential for rehabilitation. This situation forces us to confront our values and beliefs about justice and morality—how we define purpose in the lives of individuals and within society. As we ponder this, consider how these same themes play out in our daily lives and careers. Just as the state seeks to serve its purpose through the legal process, we can reflect on how our professional roles serve the greater good. Are we contributing to a positive purpose that uplifts others? Are we finding meaning in what we do, and how can we encourage others to discover their own sense of purpose? Let’s take this opportunity to reflect deeply—how can we make our work meaningful not just for ourselves, but for those around us? How can understanding these broader concepts of purpose enhance our engagement in the workplace? Your insights are valuable, and I'm eager to hear your thoughts on how we can cultivate purpose in our lives and contribute positively to our communities. -Chris U.S. Coast Guard RBLP Leader Certifications SUNY Adirondack Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce
