The Trust for Civic Life and $8 million to fund civic participation in rural communities are examples of what philanthropy can accomplish when funders work together. That was the goal when Stephen Heinz, president of Rockefeller Brothers Fund, asked Carnegie Corporation of New York to join a funder collaborative a year ago, resulting in an early commitment of $3.5 million from the foundation. Today the collaborative has 15 funders. The Trust’s work is grounded in research that was funded by philanthropy and conducted by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Its report titled "Our Common Purpose" made a strong impression. It provides pragmatic, nonpartisan approaches to countering mistrust and division in our society. A second round of grants to support civic entrepreneurs is planned for later this year, and if all goes as planned, the collaborative will invest $50 million over the next five years. https://lnkd.in/ebyPnCVt
We are proud to support a new grantmaking collaborative investing in local communities as a path to a healthier democracy. Today, the Trust for Civic Life awarded $8 million to 20 “civic hubs,” local groups in rural communities that are tackling important regional issues, bridging differences, and drawing residents back into civic life in creative ways. Too often, transportation issues are reduced to statistics, budgets, and maps. 🗺 📈 But this group of lawmakers took a Baltimore transit tour organized by Delegate Robbyn Lewis to see what it's like for transit riders, pedestrians, and wheelchair users to get around. What a powerful way for this group to experience "the feeling in their bodies of the lack of safety," to humanize Marylanders who are simply trying to do what many drivers take for granted. We have a choice. We can dismiss or make assumptions about people who advocate for improved transportation. Or we can be courageous and walk a mile in their shoes - or, take their transit journey - to understand their daily lived experiences. Which will you choose? #baltimoretransit #marylandtransit #transitforall
Lawmakers in Annapolis call the shots on Baltimore transit. One delegate wants them to ride it.

https://lnkd.in/gkQE9pu2 From Eve Anderson Hargrave's Facebook Post: This video reinforces the importance of acknowledging past injustices and listening to community voices. Thank you Mike Meinkoth for sharing! Some background on this amazing video from Mike Meinkoth: This video was produced as one of several stipulations to address a highway project’s Section 106 adverse effect upon historic properties and an Environmental Justice disproportionately high and adverse effects on a minority and low-income population - all associated with the remnant of the Foot. The Foot was the historic African-American business and residential district of Jefferson City Missouri that was basically erased in the 1960s by Urban Renewal. Because of past impacts by local government and agencies it took over 5 years of a lot of talking with the community to earn their trust that it will be their voices telling the story in this video. One of the first step of community outreach after conversations were started was setting up an oral history program run the local historical society (selected by the by the consulting parties). Hopefully this video encourages more former residents of the Foot to participate and have their stories told. All of those who were interviewed in the video reviewed and commented on the rough cut video. Unfortunately 3 of the 6 interviewees passes away before the video’s premiere at neighboring Lincoln University (a Historically Black College/University and consulting party). This strongly reinforced that time is running out to capture the memories of this shrinking population. In my 43 year career this is 1 of my top 5 memorable mitigation efforts.

The Kentucky Movement Assembly is next week and we have an amazing line-up for you! Forward Justice Action Network, Homes For All South, Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, Kentucky Civic Engagement Table, Kentucky Poor People's Campaign, Kentucky Tenants, Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice, Louisville Tenants Union, VOCAL-KY, and a growing number of supporting organizations are presenting the Kentucky Movement Assembly. The Kentucky Movement Assembly is a space for activists, organizers, students, faith leaders, and community folks from across our Commonwealth to join together, share stories, and take action on public policy. The assembly will collectively answer: 1) What are the problems that we face in Kentucky? 2) What are some solutions to those problems? 3) What are we going to do with those solutions? Despite the setbacks from our state legislature in recent years, Kentucky has a long history of effective organizing and successful social justice movements. In 2009, Kentucky Jobs with Justice held one of the only statewide social forums in the United States. Now, we're bringing that same energy to the KMA. We're launching restorative justice listening circles for our members. These circles provide a safe space to discuss community matters, facilitated by skilled professionals. Members can choose between in-person or virtual circles. Listening circles are a structured way for everyone to speak and be heard, drawing from meaningful historical traditions. Our attendants will learn more about the history. They help groups make decisions, celebrate successes, resolve conflicts, take responsibility, and support each other during challenges. The goal is for everyone to feel secure sharing their thoughts and knowing they are respected by the entire group.
