During the week of April 15, 2024, work will resume on the reconstruction project at the Blunt Junction (intersection of U.S. Highways 14 and 83) located four miles west of the town of Blunt. During the 2024 construction season, work will begin at the intersection and move approximately one mile to the westerly project limit. The contractor will be removing existing concrete, grading, and ultimately placing the new concrete surface. During the 2024 construction season, traffic will be in a two-way traffic configuration on a combination of temporary and permanent surfacing. Traffic speeds will be reduced to 45 mph through the project limits to help protect the traveling public and the contractor’s employees within the work zone. Traffic will be unimpeded for the majority of operations, which includes existing concrete removal and grading. Drivers should be aware that flaggers will be needed to assist construction traffic enter and exit the work site. Motorists can expect 10 minute delays during concrete paving when flaggers and a pilot car will be utilized. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect for duration of the project. There will be a period of time when the eastbound (Highway 14) to northbound (Highway 83) left-hand turn lane will not be available. 💭Time for a #tbt! We have particularly fond memories of the Marston Box railway bridge, part of the HS2 mega-project - one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. 💡The challenge: Development of formwork and scaffolding solutions for the construction of the bridge, pre-assembled and moved to its final position using lateral bridge sliding. 💪The solution: To avoid traffic disruptions, the 86-metre-long and 12,600-tonne box structure, including the superstructure, was completely assembled next to the M42 motorway near Birmingham and then moved to its final position by a specialised company using the box jacking method. As a result, the highway only had to be closed twice, for one week each time, over a twelve-month period. The crane-dependent wall formwork MANTO and the GASS shoring frames were used as formwork and shoring solutions to complete the project in a particularly time-, cost-, and CO2-efficient manner. This past Saturday’s beautiful weather coupled with weeks of careful planning and coordination set the stage for success in carrying out a major work activity at the busy 82nd Street & Roosevelt Avenue Station in Jackson Heights, a bustling and vibrant neighborhood in Queens, NY. #OHLAUSA’s Judlau Contracting division executed a milestone activity that required roadway closures at both 81st and 83rd Streets so that two giant Liebherr Mobile and Crawler Cranes LTM 1130 (130-ton) cranes could pick, raise, and place a total of 55 precast I-beam concrete panels -- each weighing 5,000 pounds -- into position to form the elevated station’s new Flushing-bound platform.  Using multiple crews at both street locations, the 6-foot-wide by 12-foot-long panels were lifted 200 feet overhead to prevent impacting electrical wires. The workers then carefully positioned the panels atop the rehabilitated steel superstructure and bolted and tack-welded them securely in place. The LTM 1130 mobile cranes were selected based on their ability to lift heavy loads and their maneuverability in tight spaces, which is a must for any project with a narrow footprint and difficult site logistics such as the 82nd Street Station. Once the construction of the platform has been finalized, workers will then install safety railings, overhead canopies, and windscreens for weather protection, and lighting followed by safety, electrical, and communications systems. To successfully execute this critical project, the team—including our client, the MTA, and our subcontractor, Integrated Structures Corp.—collaborated to assess risks and develop detailed construction and safety plans. Given the high volume of pedestrian traffic, the safety plan called for the deployment of 16 flaggers at key locations in the surrounding areas to ensure public safety during active construction. The lift operations required precise engineering, while extensive outreach was conducted to inform local businesses of the upcoming activities. Additionally, OHLA USA coordinated with multiple agencies, including the New York City Department of Transportation and MTA Buses, to facilitate necessary street closures. The 82nd Street & Roosevelt Avenue Station is part of the Renewal of Five Stations project in Queens, NY, where state-of-good repair improvements are underway at five stations along the #7 Flushing Line. The work focuses on reconstructing platforms and performing structural rehabilitation. #judlau #mtanyc #heavycivil #subway #liebherr #baycrane #integratedstructures #gettingitdone #weekendwork #weareOHLA #webuildexcellence
