4 Virtues that we need to bring in Building Design Good configuration This means having regular geometry, avoiding cantilevers and complicated shapes. Proper position and sizes of columns and shear walls Lateral Strength Building should have a minimum lateral strength in each direction. This shall be uniformly distributed as well. This will ensure the buildings meet the Eq. Resistant design philosophy. Adequate Stiffness This will ensure that the occupants don’t feel any discomfort and the contents in the buildings are not damaged during Earth Quakes. Ductility It is easy to understand as the property opposite to brittleness. This allows time for evacuation by avoiding brittle failure Read the blog for elaborate understanding of Ductility👇🏼 https://lnkd.in/g22eeZQu #earthquake #seismicresistance #civilengineer #structuraldesign #ductility #ductiledetailing #sitedetail #structuraldetailing

Ever notice how a lantern feels less glaring when there’s snow on the ground? It’s all about how your eyes adapt to the brightness around you. In snowy conditions, the ground reflects more light, making the surroundings brighter. This reduces the glare from the lantern, even though the light source itself hasn’t changed. This concept is important in road design too! The T.I. calculation, which measures disability glare, considers the reflectivity of the road surface. Snowy roads or surfaces with different materials, like pale concrete versus dark asphalt, can significantly alter this calculation. So, when contractors replace light-coloured concrete with dark asphalt, it can unintentionally disrupt the lighting design. Understanding these nuances helps create safer, more comfortable environments. #RoadAndStreet #LightingDesign #ThinkThorn #ThornLighting

As well as façade performance, there are lots of practicalities to consider when designing façade shading. Should mechanisms be concealed or on-show? If the glass is angled, how can the blind fabric remain flat? Have a read: https://bit.ly/3ZUg8Zk #TensionBlinds #ArchitecturalShading #ComplexShading

Last Call for Invi Air Diffuser made from an innovative composite material - Reduced Noise Levels. Invi Air’s frameless air diffusers and grilles are installed before the drywall, so when you have your mechanical plan done it’s time to specify Invi Air. Invi Air’s innovative composite material absorbs sound, significantly reducing ambient noise levels by up to 50% compared to metal grilles and vents. Standard aluminum vents can amplify the vibration and whistle of moving air. Due to our unique composite construction and limited restrictions on the rear of the diffuser, noise is limited. We strive to design our diffusers for less than 15 NC. If you want to minimize diffuser noise levels, make your first call to Invi Air to make sure you have the time to install our frameless mud-in products before the drywall. #Architecture #InteriorDesign #MEPengineering

Re-Diffuse Democracy: Retrofit old metal vents and grilles with composite air diffusers, Invi Air can upgrade a restoration of The Capitol. Restoration of national historic landmarks often poses a challenge when it comes to integrating air conditioning diffusers within an authentic architectural design that originated much before HVAC. Many historic landmarks still serve as active government institutions where a lack of AC is unthinkable, as in bustling congress and parliament buildings. From an architectural design perspective sticking unsightly metal vents and grilles on those beautiful walls and ceilings is equally unthinkable, nevertheless, up to now there was no alternative. Invi Air’s non-metal, composite-made, architectural diffusers are ideal for retrofit restoration projects, installed completely behind the wall or ceiling they integrate seamlessly leaving only a sleek slot, they can be custom-designed perfectly to blend in any surrounding, easily paintable to match any color and texture. Moreover, Invi Air Diffusers reduce any chance of diffuser condensation by up to 95% compared to metal vents and grilles, keeping those beautiful surroundings free from dampness damages (stains, cracks, rust, and mold). #Architecture #InteriorDesign

The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) in Rotterdam are an engineering triumph that defies conventional design. Designed by architect Piet Blom in the late 1970s, each cube is tilted 45 degrees, resembling a tree, and collectively forming an urban "forest." Each house rests on a hexagonal concrete pillar that provides structural stability and resists lateral forces caused by wind and vibrations. The unique tilt of the cubes shifts the centre of gravity, requiring careful weight distribution through reinforced beams and joints to prevent collapse or tipping. Despite their unusual shape, each cube maximises usable interior space with three levels, proving that creative engineering can coexist with functionality with their unique design ensures aerodynamic stability, with the tilted cubes channelling wind forces around the structure rather than against it. The Cube Houses have inspired similar designs worldwide, proving that bold architectural concepts backed by innovative engineering can change how we think about urban housing. #famousstructures #structuralengineering #engineeringfacts
