The biotech, life science, and healthcare markets are interesting right now. On one hand, we're seeing important series A and series C investments, interesting M&A activity, and imminent IPOs of well-known commodities. And on the other hand, we continue to see uncertainty as a result of regulatory upheaval and uneasy markets, which have caused 18-24 months of substantial layoff activity. In taking stock of my recent unemployment, and despite a history of my own advocacy efforts, I've been thinking on how to advocate better in the future. There are some important accounts from strong leaders that I want to highlight that have been great follows for advocating job seekers: Russell Weiner is a thought leader in the space who has clearly done right by his team. I'm learning my next steps for the next time by following his team advocacy today, while keeping an eye out on how I can help connect. Mike Nitchie is, transparently, a close friend. But honestly, when I think I've advocated well, he's shown me how to be far better, and in real-time. If you have a peer like Mike, that's amazing. And if you don't? He's the type you want in your life. Robynn Storey is a very well-known thought leader here, but one that was important to me for her storytelling capability. Her stories reinforced a course I took recently, highlighting the criticality of that skill set not only in the job hunt, but in team advocacy. Check them out of you want to help and if you want to learn. It's all really up to you.

Hiring top talent, particularly in niche fields such as actuarial science, can be a long and strenuous task for companies looking to bring someone in quickly and efficiently. While some organisations may choose to handle the task in-house, partnering with a recruitment company through a retained search model offers great advantages that can significantly improve the hiring outcome. Here's why retained search is often the better option:

I almost didn't take my current position I had been in research for over 7 years. I was comfortable (but burnt out). And was up for a promotion. So when I was offered a position with the EPMO. I was hesitant and minimized myself I was afraid my skills/experience wouldn't translate. Even after killing the interview AND getting the offer. But I knew if I didn't try, I never would. And if I hadn't, I wouldn't have: > Executed many multi-million $ projects > Grown my network professionally in and out of my org > Built a brand on LinkedIn helping other aspiring PMs So take it from me, when an opportunity comes that scares you, it's probably worth pursuing. It may change your life. Oh, and get yourself a smoke show supporter like mine, she's what got me here. True story: I had someone DM me saying they wanted to move from a CRA position to a CTM position, but they were struggling to get their foot in the door. They said recruiters wouldn’t even give them a chance for an introductory call. They didn’t know what to do. After some back and forth, I knew how to help them. This person had two opportunities to get different results: 1️⃣ Transferrable skills: this person was very focused on their current role and why they wanted to leave. When I asked about their experience and the things they loved about their current role, it was clear that a CTM position would be a great next step for them. But, they hadn’t done their research on the CTM position and they didn’t realize the amount of transferrable skills they truly had. During conversations with anyone, especially recruiters, as well as in their resume, they needed to focus more on those skills and how they would be successful applying them in a CTM position rather than talking primarily about their current CRA responsibilities. 2️⃣ Network: this person had a strong network of CRA colleagues, but hadn’t yet developed a network of CTM colleagues. Having access to CTMs is not only important for professional support, but also for getting access to great recruiters. As a CTM, recruiters are in your LinkedIn inbox daily, so it’s not difficult to know what opportunities are available. As an aspiring CTM, you can plant the seed with current CTMs that if they receive appropriate opportunities you would appreciate it if they would introduce you to the recruiter. This helps you to know about opportunities that aren’t posted publicly and through personal relationships you may have a better chance of getting traction. 📈If you’re an aspiring CTM who is looking for support to get your foot in the door, join me for a FREE online master class on Monday, August 19th at 7:30pm EST. You will leave with actionable strategies for putting systems in place at work that will get you results same day and allow you to focus on what really moves the needle in your study and your career. 2024 has presented significant challenges for the Biopharma industry, with layoffs soaring over 60% compared to 2023 and unemployment rates exceeding 25%. Interestingly, GLP-1s have emerged as the most sought-after term in the biopharma sector this year. In response to the economic volatility, Venture Capitalists (VCs) and Private Equity (PE) firms are adopting a cautious approach, opting to hold onto their funds and observe the market before making significant moves. Both established commercial-stage giants and smaller biopharmas are treading carefully in this uncertain landscape. Although Korn and Ferry predict a slight improvement in 2024, the road ahead remains challenging. Let's remain hopeful for better days ahead and keep a positive outlook on the industry's future. #Biopharma #IndustryTrends #2024Challenges

“I should have known better…” situation for me this week. Ha! Let me tell the story: I was contacted by a company as follows: “Hi Ole, Our review team asked me to reach out due to your background matching some of our paid board and advisory positions that we have been retained to do a search for and present candidates to. We would love to have a discussion. Please schedule a call at your earliest convenience.” I thought, great (…), let’s have a conversation and learn how I could help. I am serving (pro bono) on two advisory boards already, bring thirtysomething years of experience to the table, so this was interesting and in my comfort zone. 10 minutes in the conversation scheduled with an advisor from that company I learned that they were asking me to sign up for a pricey subscription, and only then they would list me and present my profile to a company. Needless to say, that call ended quite quickly. Should have known better 😊 in hindsight, of course. And, if this helps you with avoiding that ‘learning curve’, watch out for that famous email above. #shouldhaveknownbetter #foolmeonce
