New employee orientations are a key part of one’s professional journey in any organization. From what I have heard, however, only a few do it remarkably well. Many orientations are underwhelming. Imagine zesting up a new Guardian’s first day, sitting at an IMAX theater with a tub of popcorn with family and watching Wild Wild Space. What ideas might you suggest for launching Day 1 of a new Guardian?

If you haven’t read the book, which I highly recommend, you should absolutely go and see this. It’s a journey that completely captures the links between, humans, agriculture, and ecological systems and demonstrates how important leaving space for nature is for increasing realience in human and natural system. Think food systems, flood management and prevention, mental health and well-being, biodiversity, tourism, community. It’s all here.

Park rangers in flat hats in a beautiful landscape? Staff in period clothing interpreting our nation’s history? Sure, we have lots of employees who do that, but in reality National Park Service employees wear a lot of different hats—or no hats at all, or the occasional bird costume.
